Northern Food Security Assistant (Term Position)

Food Matters Manitoba is seeking a  Northern Food Security Assistant to fill a parental leave term. This position would be based out of Winnipeg and includes travel to Northern and First Nation communities, starting February 2013, 35 hours per week, $15.50-$16.50/hr based on qualifications.  

Responsibilities include

Assisting with the coordination of northern community food projects including:

  • Promoting and assisting with community planning to increase Northern food self sufficiency
  • Assisting communities with their garden activities this includes visiting communities to assist with garden development, plot preparation, planting, garden maintenance and harvesting
  • Assisting communities with food skills workshops 
  • Providing support to community champion/and or community contact
  • Making presentations on community food projects
  • Coordinating necessary resources this includes identifying and securing required equipment, program expertise and resources
  • Organizing the shipment of resources and material
  • Assisting in the coordination of northern conferences including Grow North Conference
  • Providing monthly activity reports
  • Researching funding sources and help to prepare proposals
  • Assisting with production of northern food security newsletter stories
  • Assisting with other tasks as required

About You

  • Strong understanding of the lives of First Nations peoples, communities, food and health
  • Experience and knowledge of food security issues within the Northern region
  • Highly organized with proven attention to detail
  • Experienced in Community Development  
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written, and organizational skills
  • Self motivated and a strong team player
  • Computer knowledge of word and excel
  • A valid driver’s license 
  • Access to a vehicle is considered an asset
  • Experience working in northern and First Nations communities is considered an asset
  • Experience in gardening, seed saving, and other food skills is considered an asset
  • Experience in logistics and event planning is considered an asset
  • Preference will be given to applicants of Aboriginal descent
