About the Position:
Due to the sabbatical leave of our Community Minister, a part-time person is required to oversee core programs and provide support to volunteers as they carry out the ongoing programs of the ministry. Core programs include the Food Supplement Program and Drop-In which provide a ministry of hospitality, community building, advocacy and support intended to respond to the immediate needs of folks in the neighbourhood who come with a range of concerns including hunger, lack of adequate shelter, loneliness, isolation, addictions, abuse, etc. We are home to a vibrant and vital volunteer program.
Duties:
- Support the volunteers who oversee and assist with the running of the Food Supplement Program (FSP) to ensure the respectful treatment of participants and appropriate food management (i.e. See that food is being distributed as fairly as possible to the larger community)
- Be a supportive and visible presence to (pastoral) Care Team volunteers during drop-in hours.
- Collaborate regarding the volunteer schedule for volunteers in the Drop-in and Food Supplement Programs, troubleshooting and calling additional volunteers as needed and offering staffing support if required, to ensure programs function with adequate supervision.
- Work with the Development Committee and administrative staff to support the Urban Retreats Garden Tour fundraiser. Effectively schedule, plan, promote, carry out and supervise community BBQ’s during May, June and July. Schedule, plan and promote BBQ for August (one event for each month.)
Skills and Qualities:
- Comfortable communicating and maintaining clear boundaries and established guidelines in a healthy way
- Ability to work consistently with differing personalities, needs and expectations
- Ability to listen and encourage non-judgmentally
- Willing to be a calm, de-escalating presence during stressful situations
- Experience in supporting volunteers and encouraging engagement.
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment.
- A good understanding of issues related to poverty, addictions, mental health and the impacts of residential schools.
Assets:
- Knowledge of inner city resources for referral/advocacy: specifically West Central area.

Anticipated start date is March 20th and end date is August 7th, 2013. Wage: $15.00/hour for 28 hours/week.
