Northern Food Community Economic Development Intern (CreateAction Intern)

Food Matters Manitoba is seeking a Northern Community Economic Development Intern. This position would be based out of Winnipeg and includes travel to Northern and First Nation communities, starting April 17, 2013 till September 30, 2013, 35 hours per week, $15 p/hr based on qualifications.

Responsibilities include

Assisting with the coordination of northern community food projects including:
  • Support FMM’s Grow North conferences by developing and providing workshop materials, promoting the conference among applicable northern communities, handling logistics, and overseeing evaluation; 
  • Develop capacity for community economic development in northern communities, including exploring funding options, educational opportunities, and business planning;
  • Support FMM community partners who have received funds to implement CED projects in northern Manitoba;
  • Develop materials for FMM’s northern newsletter pertaining to CD/CED;
  • Promote and assist with community planning to increase northern food self-sufficiency;
  • Share resources and best practices with Northern Healthy Foods Initiative partners;
  • Promote and educate interested community partners about CED possibilities;
  • Promote and assist in the implementation of capacity building workshops in participating communities;
  • Research funding sources assist in funding proposal preparation;
  • Participate in Create Action internship activities

About You

  • Strong understanding of the lives of First Nations peoples, communities, food and health
  • Experience and knowledge of food security issues within the Northern region
  • Highly organized with proven attention to detail
  • Experience in Community Development and Community Economic Development
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written, and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated and a strong team player
  • Computer knowledge of word and excel
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Experience working in northern and First Nations communities is considered an asset
  • Experience in logistics and event planning is considered an asset
  • Preference will be given to applicants of Aboriginal descent
Applicants must meet the following requirements for this position:
  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at time of selection
  • A post-secondary institute, college, university or CEGEP graduate
  • Out of school
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person on whom refugee status has been conferred
  • Legally entitled to work
  • Not in receipt of EI benefits
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Can demonstrate that working in the field of Community Economic Development is a career goal
  • Has not previously participated in a Career Focus work experience placement
