The Opportunity:

For a currently unemployed university graduate to work as a paid summer intern with The Community Carrot on an exciting grocery market co-operative start up venture. This position is sponsored by CED Create Action, a federally funded initiative with a special focus on building capacity and sustainability of innovative community enterprises and supporting the development of new community enterprises.

The Project:

The Community Carrot is currently in start-up mode, expecting to open the doors of its small grocery market cooperative in September 2013.  Beyond becoming the grocery market of choice for local Gottingen Street area residents seeking healthy, affordable food, The Community Carrot has a social mandate that includes collaborating with other community groups involved in food security as well as providing food nutrition education, helping inner city residents learn about food production processes through innovative initiatives like web cams from farmer’s fields into the store and ‘meet your farmer’ experiences, plus ‘how to cook’ classes and food preparation/food safety demonstrations in-store.

The Duties:

Under the direction of a skilled start-up Project Manager, you will:

  • assist in many aspects of store planning & store development, including researching & identifying health & safety requirements, coordinating the work of volunteers involved with leasehold improvements and installation of various store elements, producing equipment & product orders under the guidance of store manager, once hired, helping with the hiring & training of staff, etc.
  • assist with maintenance of a detailed project plan and be involved in a variety of on-going project management up-date meetings, trouble shooting issues and issues resolution, all under the direction of our Project Manager
  • Coordinate and set up a 2nd Harvest process as a way of involving local citizens in The Carrot prior to official store launch

Skills Required:

Candidates for this position will be selected from a pool of currently under/unemployed university/college graduate North End youth, not currently in school or receiving EI, with specific preference for Afro-Nova Scotian, new immigrant or Aboriginal youth.  The successful candidate for this CED Create Action Participant position will require the following skills and attributes:

  • a passion for social enterprise in the area of food, health and community engagement
  • strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • flexibility, coupled with the ability to remain focused in a changing environment
  • a bias for business that is socially oriented
  • good computer skills, social media skills and a strong desire to learn
  • good attention to detail, thoroughness and the ability to self organize
  • ability to take direction and complete projects while being a self-starter who can work unsupervised, as necessary
