Literacy Workbook Development and Promotion Worker

EMPLOYMENT TYPE:  Part time contract (April 29th, 2013 to November 1st 4, 2013) 
 
SALARY: 8 hours per week, $18 per hour.
 
(NB:  HOURS PER WEEK AND LENGTH OF CONTRACT ARE OPEN TO NEGOTIATION)
 
PURPOSE OF POSITION: In keeping with the mission statement and values and principles of the John Howard Society of Manitoba, Inc. (JHS), the Literacy Workbook Development and Promotion Worker is responsible for trying to increase the use of JHS’s literacy series in correctional institutions and in the broader community. This will have the twofold result of making these materials more accessible to a greater number of people, and also to increase revenue to the John Howard Society literacy program.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  Assist with development of JHS literacy workbooks
  • Final proofread of John Howard Society’s five newest workbooks: Gangs: Learning About them, Living Without Them; It’s Your Country, Too; Math: What’s the Point?; Getting a Job; and All About Anger
  • Update the resources section of workbooks; check websites and phone numbers to ensure information is current. Supply current information where needed.
  • Collect artwork from volunteer artists in the Remand Centre for placement in the All About Anger stage one literacy workbook
2.  Promotion and marketing of JHS workbooks
  • Develop a comprehensive contact list of potential workbook purchasers by both contacting previous purchasers and identifying and introducing the series to other potential buyers
  • Create workbook summary descriptions for the JHS website
3. Preparing workbook orders
  • Work with administrative assistant to prepare and package orders for shipping

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in areas of marketing and promotion
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong proofreading and editing skills
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of digital media and social networking sites
  • Ability to pass an enhanced reliability screening with Manitoba Corrections

EXPERIENCE:

  • Marketing and promotion
  • Experience working in the field of literacy program delivery an asset
  • Experience working with criminalized people would be an asset
