Food Matters Manitoba is seeking a coordinator for the Youth Taking Action on Environmental Contaminants project. This position would be based out of Winnipeg and includes travel to First Nation communities. The position starts early May 2013, 35 hours per week, $15-17/hr based on qualifications.
Responsibilities include
Assisting with the coordination of community-based research including:
- Providing support to First Nation liaisons and youth researchers.
- Assisting with project planning, implementation and communication.
- Training youth to perform diet recall interviews and Indigenous food tissue sampling.
- Coordinating delivery safe delivery of tissue samples to laboratory.
- Assisting with workshop planning, facilitation and logistics.
- Supporting project partners in project-related activities.
- Assisting with the development of video report and digital stories.
- Promoting Indigenous foods and food security on First Nations.
- Providing monthly activity reports.
- Assisting with drafting reports and educational materials.
- Researching funding sources and help to prepare proposals
- Assisting with other tasks as required.
About You
- Strong understanding of the lives of First Nations peoples, communities, food and health.
- Experience and knowledge of food security issues.
- Highly organized with proven attention to detail.
- Experienced in research design and implementation.
- Experience in research methods that may include diet recalls, interviews, food tissue sampling and other environmental health inquiries considered an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written, and organizational skills.
- Self motivated and a strong team player.
- Computer knowledge of word and excel.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Access to a vehicle is considered an asset.
- Experience working in northern and First Nations communities is considered an asset.
- Experience in working with video editing software an asset.
- Experience in logistics and event planning is considered an asset
- Preference will be given to applicants of Aboriginal descent.
