POSITION SUMMARY
The Mentorship Program Coordinator position entails responsibility for the direct service mentoring operations of Manitoba Start. All operations will be managed and implemented according to established best practices in the mentoring field and in consultation with the Executive Director or Designate. The incumbent will be responsible for selecting referred newcomers, orientating/training ,and screening them for mentorship opportunities within industry, ensuring appropriate fit for matching one-to-one opportunities.
Key to the successful implementation of the Mentorship Program is:
  • the ability to identify, interview, train, and support employers,assessing mentorship suitability and mentors’ availability;
  • providing follow-up support once each match is made;
  • planning and implementing DIT program sessions for mentors, to heighten awareness of mentees’ diverse backgrounds, learning needs, and potential contributions to the Canadian workforce once integrated into their occupation/related fields.
The Mentorship Program Coordinator is responsible for maintaining a high standard of excellence in mentoring and support services for newcomers (mentees) and employers (mentors) of all backgrounds, as well as taking initiative to further this goal by meeting operational goals and objectives, keeping the organization informed of current research and providing timely information relevant to administration, staff and the Board. The Mentorship Program Coordinator is a high profile and vitally important position representing Manitoba Start in the business and community at large continually seeking opportunities to maximize learning and engagement.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
The incumbent:
  • Must be a self-starter with a strong results orientation and possess a post-secondary diploma or degree in Human Resources Management, Commerce and/or Sales and Marketing from an accredited institution; an equivalent combination of skills, education ,and experience will be considered;
  • Has demonstrated ability to develop and nurture positive and mutually beneficial relationships with the business sector including individuals, corporations, government, labour and community-based organizations;
  • Is able to present information in a positive and concise manner; possesses awareness of the diverse range of knowledge and skills newcomers bring to the Canadian workplace, and mentorship benefits for the business and newcomer clients;
  • Has well-developed computer skills, including Word processing, database applications, and Internet research;
  • Is culturally sensitive and competent with demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize ,and meet deadlines, while performing tasks efficiently both independently and as a part of a dynamic culturally diverse team;
  • Possesses self-reliance, initiative, and a strong sense of commitment to creating partnerships and promoting opportunities for newcomers to enhance career awareness and skills required for their successful labour market integration and future growth and mobility;
  • Has experience in managing and effectively monitoring a diverse caseload of mentors and mentees, and in appropriately responding to their related needs with suitable matches/referrals;
  • Possesses a strong results-oriented approach, with advocacy and persuasive skills and the ability to work cooperatively with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals;
  • Must be client-service oriented and possess excellent interpersonal skills;
  • demonstrate sreadiness to adapt to changing priorities in a dynamic multitasking environment;
  • Must be able to work flexible hours; own transportation is a definite asset.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Design and Coordination:
  • Coordinating all aspects of the program design;
  • establishing a framework that will address program goals; and generating the resources for the program’s effective implementation and evaluation;
  • Developing appropriate tools to recruit, train, and evaluate both mentors and mentees, assessing matches’ progress and providing ongoing supervision;
  • Representing Manitoba Start at various public functions throughout the community to network and provide information about the program and its benefits to individuals and the workplace;
  • Communicating with and making targeted presentations to various personnel, employers, agencies and other organizations on behalf of Manitoba Start clientele;
  • Ensuring program services are carried out, such as activities, follow-up support to matches and DIT workshops for both mentors and mentees;
  • Working with Researcher to develop and implement ongoing evaluation procedures and to determine future program direction, ascertaining benefits derived from all involved;
  • Managing all data pertaining to matches, recording outcomes and evaluating data collected;
  • Compiling and submitting monthly data into an operational summary for funders and board;
  • Providing reports as needed to Executive Director and recommending activities that might be undertaken for the benefit of program;
  • Planning training workshops and implementing a community-based activities program;
  • Assisting with other program functions as required, such as special events, to support the effectiveness of program;
  • Taking a lead role in exploring community collaborations and developing supplemental support services for mentees including targeted approaches to bring in guest speakers and developing on-site enrichment learning opportunities;
  • Identifying, evaluating, and proposing solutions to program areas that need special attention;
  • Producing and revising mentoring services content for Manitoba Start website as required, incorporating human stories that reflect value-added benefits of the program.
Public Relations:
  • Identifying, implementing, and coordinating a variety of volunteer recruitment methods to increase the number of volunteer mentors;
  • Contacting media (newspapers, television, and radio stations) regarding public service announcement opportunities;
  • Writing articles of general interest for publication in local newspapers as opportunity arises to
  • promote visibility and program success;
  • Contacting service clubs, corporations, institutions, labour and other stakeholder/community groups for presentations;
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with groups that are potential sources of volunteer mentors;
  • Initiating new relationships with companies, individuals, schools, etc., that are potential sources of public relations volunteers (graphic artists, creative designers, writers, media professionals, marketing experts, etc.);
  • Implementing targeted strategies to recruit culturally diverse volunteer mentors who may act as role models for mentees and share experiences and learnings
POSITION EXPECTATIONS
The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • The development of a strategic framework for the implementation of Manitoba Start’s Mentorship Program;
  • The recruitment, selection, and orientation of a minimum caseload of 75 mentors and mentees from various occupational groups willing to actively engage in opportunities to learn and develop talent and skills for career growth and labour market participation;
  • Targeting up to five (5) volunteers from the community to assist in enhancing program capacity and mentees’ effective engagement;
  • Planning and implement ing at least one monthly networking and/or training opportunity to develop, support and enhance collaboration and learning;
  • Contacting matched mentors and mentees biweekly to ascertain progress and identify additional supports required;
  • Coordinating a minimum of four (4) training workshops per year for the matched individuals and inviting other prospective participants to gain additional insight regarding program benefits;
  • Maintaining ongoing communication with prospective employers via presentations at the Winnipeg and Manitoba Chambers, Human Resources Association of Manitoba, Retired Teachers Associated of Manitoba, labour groups, professional bodies, etc., seeking to heighten awareness and increased participation in mentorship opportunities that target mentees' occupational areas;
  • Working with other program staff (both paid and volunteer) to coordinate best efforts on behalf of mentees referred and to provide support for other special projects.
