Spence Neighbourhood Association (SNA) is looking for an Aboriginal Outreach Worker for our new Aboriginal Youth Employment and Cultural Outreach Program. This is a 35hour/week position with a wage of $15-17 /hour.
The Aboriginal Outreach Worker will be responsible for organizing a Junior Staff program which will employ Aboriginal youth and provide them with regular employment training opportunities. The Aboriginal Outreach Worker will also provide 5 at-risk youth with cultural and goal-oriented mentorship and organize regular Aboriginal cultural programming within the SNA youth program.
Main Duties Include:
- Organize and supervise junior staff shifts and training
- Organize and lead Aboriginal cultural programming for youth aged 12-18
- Mentor and support 5 at-risk youth
- Provide crisis support for outreach youth
- Facilitate and support youth in goal development
- Facilitate and support youth in exploration and identification of their own culture
- Facilitate and support youth in exploration of different cultures
- Connect outreach youth to supports and resources in the community
- Address basic needs (safe place, food and clothing) of outreach youth
- Develop restorative justice plans including behaviour workshops
- Supervise youth completing restorative justice and community service hours
- Complete daily progress reports and assessments of outreach youth
- Collect data and conduct evaluation for program
- Participate in planning and implementation of monthly family events
Requirements:
- Experience working with at-risk inner-city youth and/or understanding of inner-city issues
- Understanding of barriers that exist for Aboriginal youth and their families
- Experience facilitating employment programming for youth
- Knowledge of Aboriginal culture and experience facilitating Aboriginal cultural programming
- Experience in mentoring or counselling youth
- Understanding of resources available for youth within the inner-city
- Able to work in times of crisis and under pressure
- Self-motivated and able to manage a flexible work schedule
- Enjoy working with a team and individually
- Excellent organizational and administrative skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Ability to provide a current criminal record check and child abuse registry check
- Ability to work afternoons, evenings and some weekends
- Valid Manitoba Drivers Licence
- Working cell phone
Assets:
- Current First aid, CPR training, ASSIST training
- Creativity and ambition
- Experience working with youth involved in gangs
- Experience working with youth with addictions or mental health issues(especially FASD)
- Experience working with LGBTT* youth
- Understanding of the Youth Criminal Justice System
- Understanding of Restorative Justice theory and practices
- Class 4 Drivers Licence
