Rise is committed to improving the lives of people who are unable to secure employment due to mental health or addictions challenges. Rise Asset Development works to empower business owners with access to financing and business support. There are many in the community who are unable to access the traditional job market due to significant barriers linked to their mental health or addiction challenge. We recognize the interdependency of financial well-being to one’s overall quality of life.
Rise, with the support of the Rotman School of Management and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), provides micro financing and mentorship to men and women living with mental illness and addictions who are interested in pursuing self-employment. Reporting to the Program Manager, Rise Asset Development, the Loan Officer will be responsible for assisting in the administration of the loan portfolio including intake, recording and tracking of approved loans as well as facilitating the Youth Program.
Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in commerce, business or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Experience
- Minimum – 2 year’s related experience working with small business owners and entrepreneurs. Broad understanding of the local and provincial marketplace. Experience with undertaking market research. Experience working in the not-for-profit sector is an asset.
Skills
- Sound understanding of financial statements and the elements of managing a successful small business; experience in local issues of entrepreneurship, poverty and /or small business.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated skills including tact, diplomacy, maturity and sound judgement.Empathy and sensitivity to work successfully with clients with a history of mental health or addiction challenges.
- Ability to work independently, flexible and ability to adapt to varying situations, schedules and demands.
Loan Portfolio:
- Supporting prospective Rise entrepreneurs through the loan process – from managing intake to assisting the Program Manager in analyzing loan submissions/business plans to determine risk/success potential of loan requests.
- Regularly works with a variety of clients and must manage each unique client to create a positive, supportive outcome.
- Provides advice, support, counsel to loan applicants in the development of realistic and viable business plans; connects entrepreneurs with external resources or program mentors where in depth coaching is needed to develop a viable business plan.
- Reviews business plans, assessing risk/business success and makes recommendations on all business plans submitted to Program Manager. Decisions require a balanced analysis which considers both the social objectives as well as financial objectives/constraints of Rise.
- Assists in coordinating the loan funds and disbursements including monthly payments, quarterly reporting and accounts in arrears.Works closely with mentors and community agencies who provide individual support to Rise entrepreneurs.
- Works with mentors and others in the post disbursement management of the loan.
External & Community Outreach:
- Supports the Program Manager in marketing Rise.
Youth Small Business Program:
The Youth Small Business Program is designed for individuals aged 16-29 with a history of mental health or addiction challenges. This includes a group training program where participants gain practical tools, business knowledge and confidence, while converting their business idea into a viable business plan. Completion of the program comes with the opportunity for students to access Rise financing to grow their business.
- Coordinates the delivery of the training and ensures that logistics, materials etc. are in place to ensure program success.
