Summary of Function:

This Settlement Counselor’s position serves refugees facing complex life situations that impede integration. Working as part of a team, the Settlement Counselor facilitates the successful settlement and integration of refugees through comprehensive needs assessment, resource provision and supportive referrals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain client files and records in EMCN NewOrg and iCARE database in accordance with CIC Funder requirements
  • Create and submit reports to the Settlement Counselor Coordinator according to funding agreement
  • Ensure that all written documentation is professional, complete, accurate, well-formatted and grammatical
  • Collaborate with EMCN service delivery staff and community partners to identify individuals and families that could benefit from this program
  • Plan individual supports and group activities to achieve the goals of the project
  • Treat all participants and clients with dignity and patience in order to listen deeply to give thoughtful service
  • Provide comprehensive settlement needs assessment completed through intake interviews, along with development of settlement plan for each client based on identified needs and barriers
  • Provide holistic information, supportive referrals, or advocacy services for refugees as needed
  • Work as part of a holistic team with other members of EMCN settlement services staff in the provision of services for immigrant and refugee families
  • Accompany vulnerable clients to referral appointments

Qualification requirements:

  • Working understanding of the complexities of immigrant settlement issues; including housing, health, employment, and family dynamics
  • Working knowledge of comprehensive, up-to-date information about resources to meet the settlement needs of refugees with complex circumstances
  • Relevant undergraduate degree or diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience in Social Work or related human services fields (human ecology, education, psychology, family support work or related fields)
  • RSW designation if eligible
  • Three or more years of experience practicing in the social work field
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary and collaborative environment
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers
  • Experience/facility with MS Office computer applications
  • Proficiency in both official languages is an asset, as is fluency in other languages
  • Some evening or weekend work may be required for group facilitation and follow-ups
  • Possess a valid class 5 driver's license and own a reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage for work
  • Knowledgeable and abides by FOIP regulations
  • Understands and adheres to professional code of ethics

Compensation: 
$49,200.00 per annum (37.5 hours/week, 3 months probationary period)
