Job Overview
The EAL Co-ordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of EAL classes in several community locations. The position involves staff support and supervision, programme management, student advocacy and liaison between the programme and the community host site. The EAL Co-ordinator is responsible for all community sites; Fort Richmond, Fort Garry, River Heights, and Downtown. This position requires travelling to all sites.
Role and Responsibilities
Program Maintenance and Learner Support:
- Provide support to EAL Teachers including resource materials, distributing theme related resources, assisting in the acquisition of materials, assisting with challenging classroom issues
- Provide information and referral for learners and staff
- Student intake including registration and appropriate class placement, waitlist management, communication with all student referrals
- Work with childcare co-ordinator to ensure adequate childcare spaces are available if needed
- Provide an orientation for new students and gather information required by CIC in a confidential manner
- Monitor student attendance, follow up on student absences and leaves of absence ensuring adherence to agency policy
- Act as a liaison with host organizations
- Organize field trips and guest speakers, in collaboration with Lead teacher
- Ensure that the general program needs of teachers and students are met
- Administer student feedback sessions 2 – 3 times per year, collate and submit feedback reports
- Submit monthly financial claims and bi-weekly staff time sheets in an accurate and timely manner
- Provide student support letters for EIA, Daycare subsidy, Child Tax Benefit Review, and Citizenship
Staff Supervision:
- Recruit and supervise EAL Teachers, and Teacher substitutes
- Provide supervision to EAL Teachers including annual class visit and feedback sessions
- Submit payroll information to Accounting on a bi-weekly basis
Administrative Duties:
This program is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada
- Input student data into the iCARE system, or supervise the data input
- Participate in team meetings with all programme staff
- Submit quarterly activity report to the Executive Director
- Report on the number of available seats on a monthly basis to WELARC
- Maintain the student wait list ensuring adherence to agency protocols
Qualifications:
- Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate from a TESL Canada certified institution
- EAL classroom teaching experience
- Knowledge of the Canadian Language Benchmarks
- Knowledge of Portfolio Based Language Assessment
- Knowledge of the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program
- Supervisory experience
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, leadership skills
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills
- Experience working with newcomers in an EAL setting
- Experience working with children and families
- Knowledge of community resources including immigrant serving agencies and resources for immigrants
- Sensitivity to and understanding of the needs of immigrants
- Ability to work independently and be self-directed
- Ability to work cooperatively in a non-profit and volunteer based organization
- Valid Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Check
- Access to a vehicle and ability to travel within the city mandatory
Job Details:
- Location: Based at 397 Carlton Street, must have the ability to travel to community sites
- Schedule: 35 hours per week. The Co-ordinator is required to be available at various program sites from Monday – Friday. The current contract with Citizenship and Immigration Canada ends March 31, 2014, however the contract will be renewed as of April 1, 2014. Pending confirmation of funding, this will be a 52 week per year position. The anticipated start date is January 13, 2014.
- Salary: $25.25 per hour to start + benefits
