Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Childcare Coordinator, the Childcare Worker is a competent individual committed to IRCOM’s vision and mandate to empower newcomer families to integrate into the wider community through affordable transitional housing, programs, and services. This staff is a detail oriented, efficient and resourceful individual with strong interpersonal, organizational skills, able to meet the challenges of working with a culturally diverse group of community members. The ideal candidate will be able to multi-task in a fast paced environment child-focused environment prioritizing tasks and executing them to a high degree of accuracy. The Childcare Worker will exhibit and uphold core values of respect, non-violence, equality, and team work.

Objective

The objective of the Childcare Worker position is to ensure the delivery of quality care for newcomer children whose parents are participants in IRCOM programs such as the Newcomer Literacy Initiative (EAL classes) and the Community Resource Program’s workshops. The Childcare Worker is responsible for the delivery of an age appropriate childcare program for children aged 3 months – 5 years in off-site and on-site, non-licensed settings. The IRCOM Childcare Program will strive to provide safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate care for our newcomer children.

Childcare Programming

  • Supervise and ensure the physical and emotional safety of children attending IRCOM’s Childcare Program
  • Welcome and interact with newcomer children and their parents
  • Engage children in activities that support a child-centred approach and that meet the individual developmental needs of the children
  • Guide and assist children in the development of healthy eating, dressing and toilet habits
  • Assess the skills, abilities, interests and needs of children
  • Discuss children’s progress or concerns with Childcare Coordinator, parents and other staff members as needed
  • Set up and take down equipment and other items used in the program
  • Inspect childcare space/facilities for safety issues and seek corrective action according to procedures
  • Work with team members to create a positive environment
  • Regular lifting and participating in physical activities

Childcare Program Support

  • Communicate positively and effectively with childcare workers and other staff
  • Record child’s attendance, request and collect registration data, assist parents with permission slips, etc.
  • Act as an internal staff liaison to facilitate communication between the Childcare Program staff and other IRCOM staff
  • Attend regular Childcare Program meetings
  • Attend IRCOM staff meetings, CMAS/CNC trainings and other organizational trainings as needed
  • Purchase program supplies if requested
  • Other duties as assigned by Childcare Coordinator

Qualifications

  • Early Childhood Education Level II Diploma or in the process of training with completion expected before March 31, 2014 is required
  • Valid First Aid Certificate – Level B CPR
  • Valid Criminal Record Check, and clear Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Positive attitude and friendly manner
  • Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of immigrant families
  • Strength stamina and ability to work with active, young children
  • Demonstrated strong ability to work as a member of a small team
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to supporting the newcomer community through previous volunteering / community involvement is an asset
  • Knowledge of a language other than English an asset
  • Newcomer experience is an asset
  • International education/experience is valued

Hours of work

This is a part-time position for a maximum of 30 hours per week. The Childcare Worker’s hours will primarily take place during IRCOM business hours between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, however some evenings and weekends will be required. This is a term position until March 31st, 2014, pending renewal of funding.
