The Position: 

Green Action Centre, a non-profit environmental organization, seeks an individual who is independent, energetic, organized and committed to sustainability to fill an intern position with our Composting program.  The position will provide public education on composting practices and benefits to the general public, schools, workplaces and community groups in Manitoba.  The intern will work as part of a team with other Green Action Centre composting staff.    

Required skills & qualifications: 

  • self-motivated and reliable
  • ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • strong organizational skills with the ability to work in a deadline-driven environment
  • experience working with both youth and adult
  • strong verbal and written communication skills
  • demonstrated ability in public speaking and presentations
  • experience in maintaining records and writing reports
  • experience researching, disseminating and compiling information from various sources
  • willingness to work occasional evening and weekend hours
  • willingness to travel within Manitoba as required
  • a post secondary education at the university or community college level; a combination of other education and experience may also be considered
  • knowledge of environmental issues
  • knowledge of basic composting principles and techniques
  • computer skills in current software including MS Word, Excel, and Power Point

Additional preferred qualifications:

  • budgeting and project management skills and experience
  • experience organizing workshops and events
  • experience in handling media requests for interviews and information
  • experience coordinating and supervising volunteers and employees

Responsibilities: 

Principal activities include:

  • deliver how-to-compost presentations for various audiences including the general public, schools, workplaces and community groups
  • help to prepare and deliver short composting courses
  • assist schools and workplaces in implementing composting programs, including performing waste audits
  • staff composting displays at community events
  • respond to inquiries for composting information and referrals via email, internet and phone
  • assist with volunteer coordination including the assignment of volunteer opportunities, organization of meetings, e-newsletter preparation, and ongoing communication
  • assist in supervising temporary staff for special projects
  • update and develop website composting content
  • assist with development of print resources
  • assist in developing and implementing an annual project work plan for composting services
  • help to prepare grant applications, project budgets and reports
  • participate in community composting initiatives, as required
  • participate in the operation of the organization
  • perform other duties, as assigned

Term Contract Position:  March 5th, 2014 to August 29th, 2014, with a strong possibility of advancement and renewal. There is a three-month probationary period.

Salary:  35 hours per week, $17.50 per hour
