North York Community House is committed to working with individuals, groups and neighbourhoods to address the issues that are of concern to them. Delightfully Yours Catering Services (“DY”) is a new social purpose enterprise (SPE) initiative that developed organically from North York Community House's multicultural community kitchen program. Delightfully Yours Catering Services, nurtures leadership at all levels through a ‘stepping stone’ model that creates opportunities for newcomers (participants-in-training) to build on their culinary skills and experience, and gain paid employment in the food related services sector.
Position Summary
The Catering Coordinator & Culinary Skills Trainer position reports to the Program Manager and is responsible for overseeing the Delightfully Yours Catering Service’s daily operations such as: dealing with potential customers; preparing and cooking food orders; hiring cooks and assigning work schedules; and buying ingredients and kitchen supplies. Planning and delivering on-going culinary skill development training sessions; monitoring food preparations activities; ensuring timely service delivery of food orders to guests and maintaining inventory.
Main Tasks & Responsibilities:
Daily Kitchen Operations
- Monitors and controls resources, places orders and receives deliveries
- Conducts monthly inventory and checks for accuracy
- Works with various vendors on pricing, invoicing and product quality
- Monitors and controls resources, food preparation and tests cooked food
- Monitors compliance with health and fire regulations; evaluates information to determine compliance with standards
Culinary Employment & Skills Development Training
- Develop/adapt curricula and facilitate training sessions for Culinary Training Program.
- Deliver on-going kitchen and culinary training sessions to culinary employment program participants.
- Monitor trainees learning, evaluate level of skills attained and write reports to Project Lead staff per funder requirements.
- Work with project team to update and implement business, marketing and communications plan for social purpose enterprise (DY).
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and staff to market and promote DY
Supervision of SPE Personnel
- Schedules participants/trainees and assigns duties.
- Organizes, plans and prioritizes work to develop and meet catering goals
- Trains and instructs all participants on processes, procedures and proper food handling
- Guides, directs, and motivates participants, setting and monitoring performance standards
- Establishes standards for personnel and customer service
- Conducts performance reviews for all permanent and on-call participants
- Assist Project Lead in selecting program trainees and in hiring process of new cooks.
Team Collaboration
- Attends team and committee meetings as required
- Prepare project reports on monthly basis and/or as required
- Works as a team with other staff, including managers, supervisors and departments
- Participate and contributes to planning and executing agency special events
Required Qualifications:
Education
- Minimum High School Diploma with 3 years of food management/catering environment experience; or: College degree on Hospitality Management Certificate and a minimum of 2 years experience in food management/catering environment.
- Certificate and License Requirements: Food Handling Certificate
- Experience working with social enterprise/social purpose enterprise initiatives an asset.
Experience and Skills
- Experience coordinating several activities or projects at one time, required
- Experience assisting with recruitment, hiring, and training of cooking staff, preferred
- Positive collaborative approach when working in a team environment to achieve the goal of the Social Purpose Enterprise
- Must be assertive, fair, consistent and courteous when dealing with participants, co-workers and customers.
- Must be self-starter, punctual, and highly organized
- Able to make sound decisions and handle adverse situations.
- Initiative to work independently and meet deadlines
- Ability to keep accurate records and complete necessary business documentation
- Ability to properly and safely operate field equipment
- Valid driver's license and access to vehicle, a positive asset
- Skills in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Other Requirements:
- Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes some evening and weekend hours, as required
- Will require regular travel within North York/northwest Toronto
- A successful clearance of criminal record verification will be required
