THE OPPORTUNITY

The Coady International Institute seeks an Associate Director of Education Programs who will work closely with the Director and other staff to coordinate, develop and ensure the quality of its rapidly growing educational programs. The Associate Director will also have an opportunity for teaching or other direct involvement in program activities, and, as a member of the Management Team, will contribute to the overall strategic development of the Institute.

This is a full-time permanent position located at the Coady International Institute on the campus of St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, with potential for travel within North America and overseas.

Other programs focus on leadership of women, youth, and indigenous people, both in Canada and internationally. In 2013, over 300 leaders from 48 countries took part in Coady's diploma and certificate programs on its StFX-based campus.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • At least 5 -10 years experience in adult education or related fields;
  • At least 5 -10 years experience in international development, especially in the contexts of community-led development and change. Additional experience in the Canadian context is also as asset;
  • Experience in curriculum design, teaching and leadership development, with demonstrated understanding of and commitment to participatory and transformative approaches;
  • Experience in management of professional staff, as well as administration of educational or similar programs;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the values of community-based, citizen-led change;
  • Knowledge and experience related to one or more of Coady's current themes strengthening local economies, building resilient communities, and promoting accountable democracies and/or themes related to women's, youth and indigenous leadership;
  • A Master's degree in a related area of study or equivalent; a Phd or equivalent is an asset;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and organizational skills; English fluency required. Other languages are an asset;
  • Strong facilitation and pedagogical skills and understanding.

KEY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the design, implementation and quality of educational programs on and off campus;
  • Manage and supervise assigned teaching and other staff, as well as oversee budgets and the financial management of departmental programs;
  • Contribute to overall strategic development, planning and management of the Institute as a member of the Management Team;
  • Contribute to the management and coordination of admissions, recruitment, and quality of student life, working closely with other staff;
  • Facilitate selected modules or courses, while also playing an advisory role to other staff on curriculum design, pedagogy, and planning;
  • Participate in other research, networking, knowledge-building activities of the Institute as appropriate.

Antigonish is a beautiful, vibrant town located in northern Nova Scotia on the Northumberland Strait. About 200 km from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and 250 km from Moncton, New Brunswick, Antigonish is home to the Antigonish Movement, and has a long history of social justice activity.
