Synopsis:

The Mission Thrift Shop is actively engaged in receiving and selling used clothing, small housewares, books, toys, and collectibles with all proceeds designated to support the relief and development work of Mennonite Central Committee.

This particular assignment involves pick-up and delivery of shop item (using a one tonne truck), in a manner that is efficient and fostering Christian respect for customers, staff and volunteers.

This 5 month interim salaried position is full-time (40 hours week) and involves working on a rotating schedule, including some Saturdays. Only those candidates who are legally eligible to work in Canada should apply.

Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and willing to take initiative, while at the same time responding to the direction of the Shop Manager.
  • Good team player.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills: willing and able to work with a variety of people; friendly, outgoing and appreciative of volunteers.
  • Valid Class 5 (minimum) BC driver's license and ability to drive a one tonne delivery truck.
  • Excellent driving record, including satisfactory Driver's Abstract.
  • Ability to navigate the surrounding area using maps.
  • Ability to work with one's hands.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Retail experience and interest is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate in English.
  • Willingness to work with one's hands.
  • Ability to reflect the Anabaptist value of service
  • A heart for social justice from a biblical perspective.

Assignment Description:

This particular assignment involves pick-up and delivery of shop item (using a one tonne truck), in a manner that is efficient and fostering Christian respect for customers, staff and volunteers.

This interim salaried position is full-time (40 hours week) and involves working on a rotating schedule, including some Saturdays. The Shipper & Receiver/Driver will be accountable to the MCC BC Mission Shop Manager.

Duties:

  • Responsible for driving 1 tone vehicle on a daily basis.
  • Deliver and pick-up furniture and recycled materials throughout the Mission area.
  • Ensure that furniture picked up is in good condition for sale in the shop.
  • Ensure that furniture and appliances are delivered to customers in good condition, with delivery being handled in a professional and polite manner.
  • Ensure the truck is kept clean (inside and out) and that regular maintenance and repairs are done.
  • Assist with moving of furniture and other items between the back room and retail floor.
  • Confirm schedule pick-ups and deliveries.
  • Articulate the mission/purpose of MCC to customers/donors, as required.
  • Model nonviolent peacemaking in the work place, in the community and the church.
  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those we serve, including the staff and volunteers, the customers and the local community.
  • Participate in daily staff devotion time.
  • Participate in planned MCC trainings, as required.
  • Perform other duties, as required.

Location Description:

Mission is a city in the Fraser Valley, approximately 70 kms drive from Vancouver. Mission is located in the Fraser Valley on the North side of the Fraser River and backs on to to the local mountains. The increasingly multi-cultural city has grown somewhat in the last years with building programs and an emergence of new businesses. It serves the community well with a full range of health, community and social services. Mission has access to all essential services and amenities.

Challenges:

The position requires working in a comfortable but fast-paced retail shop / shipping & receiving environment and requires spending a significant portion of time on one's feet.

The position involves the constant handling of used goods and the lifting/moving of objects of up to 50 lbs; significant amounts of heavy lifting of furniture are included in this role. This position involves working outside in varying weather conditions for significant periods, unloading and loading furniture. Steel toed boots and work gloves are required. The use of special lifting equipment is provided for moving and lifting, as needed.

The position further requires the ability to respond to the demands/requests from customers/donors, particularly as one is delivering and picking up furniture, as well as in the receiving area of the shop.
