Job Summary:

Accountable to the WWRA Board of Directors and the NISP supervisor the Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement Worker will work with Newcomers to Canada one-on-one and in groups to welcome them to the neighbourhood and provide a variety of settlement services.

Terms of Employment:

  • June 9th, 2014 – June 8th , 2015
  • 22 hours per week with a flexible work schedule (to be discussed).  Some evening and weekend work will be required.
  • Wage to be negotiated, based on qualifications of the successful candidate

Job Description:

Work with Clients and NISWs:
Work respectfully and cooperatively with clients, co-workers and partner organizations.
Conduct formal and informal talents / interests / needs assessments with Newcomers.
Conduct home visits, office visits, phone calls and accompaniments around Winnipeg with newcomer families and individuals to:

  • Welcome them to the neighbourhood
  • Invite newcomers to community events
  • Identify and respond to interests / requests / needs with information and referrals
  • Take part in social gatherings / do community-building

Assist people with completing forms, navigating systems, identifying resources etc.
Contact new potential clients.
Co-organize and implement programs and events (educational, recreational, social).

Administration and Accountability

Record hours and activities, write monthly reports and other reports as needed
Report to the the NISP supervisor and WWRA board as needed
Take some responsibility for program finances

Qualifications and Expectations:

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Relevant education and / or experience as a Newcomer and / or working with Newcomers
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills
  • Ability to communicate in (a) language(s) other than English
  • Willingness to work in changing conditions and deal with surprise visits, phone calls and requests
  • Good communication skills across cultures, and a non-judgmental attitude.  Ability to encourage people and notice their strengths.  Ability to set appropriate boundaries.
  • Good computer and literacy / document-writing skills
  • Understanding of Winnipeg's North End environment and Non-profit work
  • Child abuse and criminal record check

Assets (Not required)

  • Valid Province of Manitoba Class 5 Drivers License and access to a working vehicle
  • Relevant courses or workshops (plain language, intercultural studies, other)

Note: This is a maternity leave position starting June 9th, 2014 and ending June 8th, 2015.
