Description:
Reporting to the Director of Hostel and Housing, and as lead part of a Social Enterprise Team, this position manages and develops all employment, training and social enterprise activities within Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre, with a focus at the North Site Men’s Shelter, transitional housing, and drop-in locations.
The main groundwork of this position is to help homeless community members stabilize their lives, set and advance toward their self-directed goals, achieve income security, and to aid in supporting successful transition from shelter to sustainable housing. This position includes working with people who face multiple barriers to employment including mental health challenges, substance abuse, social isolation, precarious status, ageism, unemployment/underemployment, and experience in conflict with the law.

The community members we work with come from diverse backgrounds, culturally, ethnically, and socio-economic histories and candidates will need to show an ability to work with individuals across many differences. In combination, this position requires highly specialized knowledge of business management and is best suited for a highly motivated professional with an indomitable spirit and with a passion for social innovation and social justice.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with stakeholders to:
- Develop social enterprises within the hostel, transitional housing and drop-in program at CONC
- Develop employment, training and social enterprise opportunities with the active involvement of residents, and the Case Management Team, from the men’s shelter, transitional housing and drop-in program
- Develop strategic partnerships to create employment and training opportunities for CONC participants
- Liaise with funders and government representatives to secure employment and training contracts that will benefit the homeless community
- Provide oversight and integration among staff team and participants for all inhouse social enterprise operations and lead and facilitate social enterprise development.
- Responsible for ensuring clear measurable achievements in both participant growth and development and financial revenue targets, with the support of the Executive Director and the Finance Manager
- Lead employment and social enterprise team in the development and implementation of an action plan for achieving identified Training, Education and Employment Team and Case Management Team outcomes
- Develop, review and revise business plans for each social enterprise
- Oversee the development of curriculum and in-house programming related to skill development and employment training
- Direct and supervise the Employment and Social Enterprise Supervisor
- Initiate new social enterprises to diversify supported employment opportunities and assist clients in advancing toward self-sufficiency
- Create industry connections and build relationships with employers
- Liaise with Social Enterprise Toronto (SET) and other networks
- Work in collaboration with the Social Enterprise Senior Leadership Team at CONC
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 2-3 years experience in social enterprise and or business management
- Direct experience developing and operating a social enterprise is an asset
- Experience in leading business development activities with accountability for achieving monthly sales targets
- Experience developing core business strategy
- Familiarity with the non-profit sector and employment training programs/services
- Understanding and experience working with vulnerable populations
- Strong organization, time management, communication (oral and written), problem solving and leadership skills required
- Experience in marketing and communications; social and digital media
- Literacy in Microsoft Office and Windows applications
OTHER TERMS:
- Non-bargaining unit position
- Responsible for hiring, progressive discipline, performance evaluation, and termination, of the Social Enterprise team, North Site
- Responsible for/experience with, grievances, labour relations, and Management within unionized setting
- Responsible for administering the collective agreement
- Responsible for recruitment and talent development within Social Enterprise Team, North Site, bargaining unit
- Subject to a 6 month probationary period
