Spence Neighbourhood Association is looking to fill a full-time Rental Safety Coordinator position. The Spence Neighbourhood rental safety program, provides, advocacy, safety and support to renters, landlords and rental property owners. The eligible candidate will be able to liaise and work with all three groups to create programs for tenants in our community. This position will be address issues like rental safety concerns, bed bugs and more. An important part will be working with landlords and tenants to make and keep housing safe and comfortable.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Organize tenants (with a focus on rooming house tenants) and tenant groups for the care of their rental units and buildings
- Advocate and mediate for both landlords and tenants with the Rental Tenancy Branch, Employment Income Assistance programs and other service agencies.
- Find services and resources for tenants, helping those who need the extra attention to assure they get the resources and supports they need. Where possible, motivate tenants to help each other.
- Assist and instruct tenants in doing condition reports and keeping documents secure for future reference
- Assess what is needed in a unit to make it liveable, encourage landlords to meet their responsibilities and organize repairs as needed
- Provide training for existing and potential caretakers so that they are able to meet the needs of tenants in the Spence Neighbourhood
- Organize and run the Spence Neighbourhood Tenant Committee
- Support tenants and landlords to ensure safe and secure rental properties
- Work with tenants, landlords and community partners to address current rental housing issues such as bed bugs, hoarding etc.
Desired qualifications:
- Excellent interpersonal skills, motivating landlords, caretakers and tenants to take responsibility for finding and implementing solutions to rental related problems
- Ability to advocate and mediate where needed
- Ability to help individuals and groups identify and achieve their goals
- Ability to organize learning for caretakers, tenants and landlords and/or refer them to learning opportunities
- Use a case management approach for tenants needing follow-up
- Ability to assess clients as to their ability to negotiate services, giving assistance as required.
- Self starter with an eagerness to see progress while not taking over the responsibilities of others.
- The ability to use email, WORD, Excel and data entry considered an asset
Assets:
- Current First aid, CPR training
- Creativity and ambition
- Experience working in the inner city community
- Experience working with Winnipeg rental network, mental health, EIA, CFS, addictions supports etc
Hours and remuneration:
The Employee agrees to fulfill a 30 hour work/week. SNA agrees to pay $14-$16 per hour for a 30 hour work week on a bi-weekly schedule, with hours paid as worked. Required CPP, EI, and tax deductions will be made and employer contributions will be paid. Responsibilities may require flexible hours to be worked (i.e., evenings and weekends). However, regular hours will be between 10 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday.
