The Northern and Indigenous Program Youth Liaison is an opportunity to engage Aboriginal young people on issues of food security and traditional food. The staff person will organize connections between Aboriginal youth addressing food security in their communities, work with Aboriginal youth in Winnipeg’s North End and support program staff implementing work related to youth and food security. The Young Aboriginal Food Coordinator will work as part of Food Matters Manitoba’s Northern and Indigenous Program team. The position is 35 hours per week at $14 per hour from early December to March 31, 2015.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
- Help coordinate Food Matters Manitoba’s Indigenous Advisory Committee;
- Coordinate in person and/or electronic gatherings to connect Aboriginal youth interested in food security;
- Facilitate food skills workshops with Aboriginal youth in Winnipeg’s North End;
- Provide support to programming focused on youth in Winnipeg’s North End;
- Support project logistics for programs with Aboriginal youth including organizing the shipment of resources and supplies;
- Assist in the planning for events including the Grow North conference;
- Other duties as assigned.
ABOUT YOU
- Aboriginal individual who meets the eligibility requirements as outlined below;
- Experience working with youth;
- Strong understanding of the lives of Aboriginal peoples, communities, food and health;
- Knowledge of food security issues in Manitoba;
- Food skills (cooking, traditional food skills) an asset;
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills;
- Highly organized with proven attention to detail;
- Experience in logistics and event planning;
- Self-motivated and a strong team player;
- A valid driver’s license.
Eligibility Requirements:
Based on funding for this position, the successful applicant must be eligible for Employment Insurance or have had a previous EI claim in the past five years but not currently be a recipient of Employment Insurance. The position is funded through the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development. As this position involves working with children and youth, employment contingent on a successful child abuse registry check.
