Hours: Average of 30 hours per week (guaranteed, but may be unevenly distributed)
Contract length: 52 weeks, with opportunity for renewal
Work location: Hatch Ptbo, 120 Murray Street, Peterborough, ON and job sites in the City of Peterborough

Job Description

The Candidate

We are looking for an entrepreneurial spirit with relevant experience in property maintenance and/or landscaping work, strong leadership qualities, and a background that demonstrates the ability to work with marginalized people facing barriers. In addition, you are engaged in the civic life of your community and are prepared to introduce trainees to community events and initiative, widening their experience and developing their interests. You believe in the potential of others to achieve great things under the right conditions, and are motivated to create those conditions.

You are reliable, proactive, enthusiastic, and compassionate. You either have management experience or are eager to learn business management skills from a supportive team at COIN. You have excellent problem-solving skills, and time management.

You are looking for the opportunity to create something from scratch, contribute to a stimulating work environment, have great coworkers, and some flexibility. A driver’s license is a must, and a vehicle is an asset. You believe strongly in equity, social justice, and COIN mandate.

The Role

Launching a Property Maintenance Service

Using the research in our feasibility study:

  • Quote on contracts (mostly already identified)
  • Purchase equipment
  • Create systems for operations
  • Coordinate with COIN Communications Specialist to design logo, website, and other branding and promotional materials
  • Coordinate with COIN Administrator to review and adjust pilot financial projections and budgets as necessary
  • Ensure all systems of accountability and risk management are in place, with assistance from COIN Pilot Team
  • Liaise with customers, act as spokesperson for social enterprise

Launching a Training Program

Work with COIN Manager of training to:

  • Recruit and select trainee candidates for two summer training sessions;
  • Supervise trainees on-site at jobs, developing and following protocol for learning how to safely use all equipment;
  • Design and implement property maintenance skills development programming for trainees;
  • Assist Manager of Training to deliver in-class training in job readiness and property maintenance business skills;
  • Create a program of guest trainers that will expose trainees to potential employers and a broader, marketable, skillset;
  • Organize and supervise team outings that expose trainees to diverse opportunities to develop their skills and interests through civic engagement; and,
  • Create a progressive training program that offers increasing opportunities for trainees to demonstrate accountability, time management, problem-solving, and establish a record of good performance.

Business Planning

Build a sustainable social enterprise by:

  • Using the seasonal operations to test assumptions, and strategically experiment to find the best way of doing things;
  • Building partnerships with potential customers for the enterprise and employers for graduating trainees;
  • Learning from trainees about what motivates them and what supports they need to attain the best outcomes;
  • Pursuing professional development opportunities with the support of the COIN pilot team;
  • Creating shareable social impact stories to help customers and future trainee candidates understand what kind of barriers trainees can overcome through the program and what they go on to achieve;
  • Developing a detailed business plan based on the pilot season and existing feasibility study; and,
  • Working with the COIN Manager of Organizational Development to research solutions and opportunities as needed.
