The West Broadway Community Organization is a not-for-profit, charitable organization that coordinates neighbourhood renewal in our community. WBCO works with residents and stakeholders toward environmentally sustainable, social and economic development in the West Broadway neighbourhood. The Rooming House Outreach Program (RHOP)
RHOP provides supports to rooming house tenants and landlords, addressing structural deficits and social issues in order to improve the well-being of the building as a whole.
Job Objective:
- To ensure that safe, long term tenancies for individuals residing in rooming houses can be maintained in West Broadway
- Stabilize tenancies and prevent evictions
- Streamline access to services and reduce barriers to accessing supports
- Ensure that existing services and resources are brought to bear most efficiently and without duplication
Job Responsibilities:
- Support the self-sufficiency of rooming house tenants who are at imminent risk of homelessness
- Work from a resident-centered care model with a strengths based approach
- Perform assessments with rooming house tenants who are at risk of homelessness
- Work with tenants to remove barriers to maintaining safe, appropriate housing
- Offer one-to-one support to tenants in accessing resources and programs, strengthening community ties, and fostering healthy relationships between tenants and landlords
- Build the capacity of marginalized residents to become more self-reliant
- Build positive relationships between community members, particularly between vulnerable tenants, their neighbours, and service providers
- Undertake, organize, and facilitate community development activities aimed at enhancing community capacity, optimism, and wellbeing
- Work with service providers to ensure that individuals who are at risk of homelessness have access to emergency or ongoing assistance (EIA, WRHA, Manitoba Housing, etc)
- Provide information and referral services to tenants
- Address and correct structural deficits in rooming houses
- Participate in relevant committees
General:
- Tracking, reporting, and evaluation of program, identifying new sources of funding and partnerships
- Support WBCO staff team by attending staff meetings, occasionally helping out at WBCO events (ie spring cleanups, AGM, winter festivals)
- Representing WBCO at appropriate events
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
Community service worker diploma, Bachelor of Arts in social sciences, urban and inner city studies,
and/or equivalent education/experience
Non-violent Crisis Intervention, ASIST, First Aid/CPR, Mental Health First Aid, Trauma Informed Care, etc.
Experience:
Two - three years of related work experience in community-based programming, social services,
community planning, and communication
Knowledge:
Skills in the following areas are essential to the position:
- Project management
- Supervising staff and volunteers
- Community development approaches and practices
- Community and event organizing
- Report writing, briefs, and article
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Evaluation, reporting, and proposal writing skills
- Outreach with diverse populations
- Working with historically marginalized populations
- Harm reduction approaches
- Understanding of poverty and homelessness issues
Compensation:
$18/hour; 35 hours/week
