West Broadway Community Organization (WBCO) is a not-for-profit charitable organization working with residents, businesses and stakeholders to plan and coordinate neighbourhood renewal efforts in West Broadway. WBCO’s mission is to respect and support West Broadway’s diversity and livability.

The Rooming House Outreach Program (RHOP) – Core Objectives:

  • Stabilize tenancies and prevent evictions amongst West Broadway rooming house residents
  • Reduce displacement and homelessness amongst local residents
  • Assist tenants in accessing supports and programs, building strong ties to the community, and fostering healthy relationships between tenants and landlords
  • Increase the lifespan of an aging housing stock and preserve affordable market-housing units

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work one on one with tenants to identify and implement eviction prevention strategies
  • Support tenants in accessing local resources, programs and employment opportunities
  • Build positive relationships between community members, particularly between rooming house tenants, neighbours, landlords, and service providers
  • Assist tenants in minor fix-ups of their homes: patch/paint, clean, yard maintenance, etc.
  • Create socially supportive engagement opportunities through activities, outings, workshops, etc.
  • Work with service providers to ensure that isolated tenants have access to emergency or ongoing assistance (EIA, WRHA, Manitoba Housing, etc.)
  • Organize skill-building workshops: money management, nutrition, rental safety, etc.
  • Work with participants to create recreational activities in-house and in the community
  • Participate in relevant committees
  • Track program delivery and prepare monthly reports
  • Support WBCO staff team by attending staff meetings and WBCO events

Education:

Bachelor of Arts or Diploma in relevant field of study (Urban Planning, Conflict Resolution, Community Economic Development, Inner City Studies, etc), and/or equivalent experience

Experience:

Minimum one year of related work experience in community-based programming

Knowledge:

Skills and knowledge in the following areas are essential to the position:

  • Outreach with/to diverse populations
  • Harm Reduction and Housing First methodologies
  • Understanding of poverty and homelessness issues
  • Community Economic Development
  • Event and project organizing
  • Strong oral and written communication
  • Light renovations, painting, janitorial work

Compensation:

$18/hour
35 - 40 hours/week
Contract position ending March 31, 2015 with possibility of renewal/extension
