Violence Prevention Project Coordinator

Spence Neighbourhood Association is looking to fill a project position (6 month Maternity leave position with potential for extension) as a Violence Prevention Project Coordinator. The Violence Prevention Project was a really successful 24 week program ran this past year. We are entering the second phase of the project where we are looking to empower young people in our community to be leaders in violence prevention. The coordinator will run weekly sessions with teens from our community, along with a girls group and other related activities at the Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre.

Main Duties:

  • Mentor and support project participants
  • Build relationships with, and support Youth Program staff in addressing violent or sexist behavior as per SNA behaviour management policy
  • Facilitate regular workshops and developing existing curriculum approved by the Canadian Women’s Foundation
  • Promote project in the West End and network with West End schools and social service agencies
  • Connect youth affected by violence/trauma to appropriate community resources
  • Manage budget in cooperation with SNA’s finance officer
  • Complete weekly logs and reporting as required
  • Participate in SNA staff meetings and community events

Requirements:

  • Relevant education/experience in violence prevention, Indigenous issues/anti-colonial theory, program facilitation, youth care, or other relevant fields
  • Experience working with at-risk inner city youth
  • Experience facilitating youth-led workshops similar programming
  • Demonstrated understanding of barriers faced by Native, Afrikan, and Newcomer youth and their families
  • Demonstrated understanding of lateral violence and the intersectionalities between colonialism, racism and sexism
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Able to work in times of crisis and under pressure
  • Self motivated with excellent time management skills
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to provide a Criminal Record check and Child Abuse Registry check including the vulnerable persons section
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Working cell phone

Assets:

  • Relevant training including First Aid/CPR; ASIST, and NVCI
  • Experience working with youth suffering from addictions
  • Experience working with youth with metal health issues (especially FASD)
  • Experience working with marginalized youth/youth disproportionately affected by violence
  • Experience in management of crises situations.
  • Facilitation and leadership skills

Hours and remuneration:

The Employee agrees to fulfill a 37.5 hour work/ week. SNA agrees to pay $17 per hour on a bi-weekly schedule, with hours paid as worked. Required CPP, EI, and tax deductions will be made and employer contributions will be paid. Responsibilities may require flexible hours to be worked (i.e., evenings and weekends). However, regular hours will be between 3 pm and 8pm Monday to Friday.
