Introduction:

Momentum staff are expected to work cooperatively with others; demonstrate flexibility in organizing work; have good communication skills; and demonstrate thoughtfulness in decision making.

Responsibility:

The Public Policy Coordinator reports to the Manager of Public Policy. The position provides executive-level administrative support to the Manager of Public Policy, community engagement and liaison coordination, communication coordination, and policy research and writing on behalf of Momentum and provincial poverty reduction networks.

Accountabilities:

This position will provide support and coordination to the Public Policy program in the following areas:

  1. Well-coordinated activities, events, meetings and documentation.
  2. Public policy and community engagement organization and coordination, meaning support for a cause or point of view, including calls to action and communications on government policy.
  3. High level of community and emerging issue awareness and engagement.
  4. Effective policy research, writing, and development.
  5. Up-to-date, professional and credible communications.
  6. Administrative support to the Public Policy Committee and Manager through agenda development, minutes, and regular updates on the activities of the Public Policy program.
  7. Grant funding applications, reports, and progress updates for review by Manager of Public Policy.
  8. Media relations and communications.

Major Responsibilities:

Administrative Coordination

  • Coordinate the administrative details involved in projects, events, etc.
  • Schedule and coordinate meetings.
  • Draft and distribute meeting minutes.
  • Track tasks with deadlines to ensure they are completed on time.
  • Make travel arrangements as required.
  • Prepare expense claims, and other forms for the Manager.
  • Maintain Public Policy Program files.
  • Draft internal status reports, quarterly reports, work plans, and program logic models in a timely manner.
  • Draft grant funding applications and reports for review by the Manager of Public Policy

Community Engagement

  • Identify outreach and education opportunities related to poverty reduction and community economic development (CED).
  • Participate in related seminars, discussions and briefings on behalf of Momentum, and in conjunction with other internal and external partners as appropriate.
  • Initiate contact with relevant stakeholders, including poverty reduction and community economic development (CED) organizations, the business sector and academia, as appropriate.
  • Engage relevant stakeholders to develop a community response to policy issues, as appropriate.

Policy Research, Writing, & Support

  • Support and develop relationships with elected officials, government staff, and counterparts from other community organizations.
  • Represent Momentum and the Public Policy program at relevant meetings, briefings, events, and other policy venues.
  • Provide input to efforts to formulate, implement, and/or track policy initiatives and contact with government officials.
  • Perform policy research and writing on topics of relevance to the Public Policy Program and poverty reduction.
  • Identify and study key emerging policy issues of relevance to Momentum staff and programs.
  • Obtain and verify data and statistics.

Communications

  • Compose drafts and finished documents of a considerable variety (letters, articles, presentations, funder reports, etc.) from verbal or written instructions for the Manager.
  • Prepare reports and research briefs where the information is gathered from several sources.
  • Edit and proofread written documents.
  • Act as co-administrator for Facebook page, website, and twitter account.
  • Lead the provincial poverty reduction strategy awareness campaign through the Action to End Poverty Alberta website and social media
  • Coordinate media outreach and engagement on topics related to public policy and poverty reduction.
  • Maintain up to date contact information for relevant civil servants, elected officials, and media.
  • Write policy related blog posts for the Momentum blog

Qualifications, Experience & Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree with focus on government relations, social policy, public administration and/or  communications.
  • Ability to think critically and act strategically.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, coordination, and planning skills.
  • Political astuteness and knowledge of government processes and policy formulation.
  • Ability to draft clear and concise communications on a tight deadline.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of office procedures, including records management, electronic mail and calendar software applications, meeting and event coordination.
  • Ability to work well with a wide range of people and entities, across sectors.
  • Personal integrity and good judgment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills: ability to manage multiple priorities in an outcomes-based environment to deliver results.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Ability to verbally articulate complex policy issues and reasoning in a clear way including to elected officials and civil servants
  • High level of expertise in computer software applications: PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe (using PDFs), using internet and email, web design/maintenance software.
  • Experience with social media including Facebook and Twitter.
  • Flexibility to travel occasionally provincially and domestically as needed.
  • Experience in working with marginalized or barriered individuals, including multicultural sensitivity and awareness.
  • Knowledge of poverty reduction and community economic development (CED) an asset.
  • Experience with media relations, including acting as spokesperson, an asset.
