East Scarborough Storefront, a project of Tides Canada, is a unique community organization in the priority neighbourhood of Kingston Galloway/Orton Park.  The Storefront uses a Connected Communities approach to community development; this means that our main focus is to leverage the power of collaboration to support people and build community. Storefront staff act as a bridge, catalyst and facilitator between and among community members, services and resources.

The Position

To work with colleagues and partners to deliver employment consultation and work with local residents to develop tools to become effective job seekers.  Work involves reviewing with community members their employment aspirations, helping identify supports to reach their goals, creating employment action plans, connecting residents to job opportunities, and working with community partners to access training, placement and job opportunities.

Responsibilities include:

Support to Community Members:

  • Work with local residents seeking employment: perform intakes, conduct employment assessments, develop employment goals and action plans, and maintain follow-up
  • Act as an advocate for residents in obtaining employment and collaborate with other staff and local networks to find appropriate job placements
  • Use community based resources to provide additional supports and work with Storefront partners to assist community members attain job readiness
  • Facilitate employment workshops focused on addressing community needs
  • Identify supports residents may need, community assets to build upon, and opportunities to leverage, to help people reach their employment aspirations

Employment Resource Centre Management:

  • Ensure that facilities are neat and the environment is welcoming
  • Collect labour market information including job openings, skill requirements and other information, and ensure information is up to date, accessible and comprehensive
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations and processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality seamless support to community members

Information Management:

  • Maintain database information and ensure all paperwork supporting employment action plans and employer agreements is complete
  • Keep accurate and complete records of information, referrals and supports provided

Community Outreach:

  • Promote The Storefront’s employment supports and resources in the community, including conducting presentations, displays and participation in community events
  • Liaise and network with community agencies, leaders, and members of the public

Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications:

  • 2 years of post-secondary education in a relevant field
  • 2 years’ experience directly supporting people seeking employment or equivalent relevant experience
  • A thorough understanding of community work, and a demonstrated ability to apply an empathetic and holistic approach to assisting community members
  • Able to create inclusive and non-judgemental environments
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from various backgrounds and in various cultures and contexts
  • Understanding of labour market trends and resources
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Comfort with group and workshop facilitation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong computer proficiency and attention to detail; database skills are considered an asset
  • A second language is considered an asset
  • Flexibility to perform a wide variety of tasks

Full time Monday to Friday, schedule to be determined, occasional evening and weekend work required.
