Spence Neighbourhood Association/ West End 24 hour safe space is looking to fill the Safe Space Coordinator position which is 37.5 hours per week. The Spence Neighbourhood Association is looking for a coordinator for the West End 24 Hour Safe Space initiative. The Safe Space Coordinator is a highly motivated individual with experience in project and staff management. They will be coordinating the Safe Space project as well as supporting and supervising outreach staff directly and youth staff alongside the Youth Programs Manager. The Safe Space initiative is a community led initiative to create a safe space on weekends and on school holidays for youth in the West End of Winnipeg.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Provide overall coordination, promotion and evaluation for WE 24 HOURS project
- Oversee reporting, proposal writing and new project development
- Support and supervise program staff and volunteers through coaching, conflict resolution, crisis management and achieving project goals.
- Conduct staff reviews, disciplinary and hiring procedures
- Facilitate regular staff meetings and professional development
- Oversee Restorative Justice process and behaviour management
- Maintain project budget and oversee cash flow
- Maintain basic needs cupboard and oversee program purchases
- Network with Newcomer, Aboriginal and cultural agencies
- Organize and implement Safe Space programming
- Maintain communication with project funders
- Organize and support the WE 24 hours governance body and committees
- Ensure strong communication with all staff during the week and on weekends
Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years experience supporting and supervising other staff
- Minimum 2 years working with at-risk Aboriginal and Newcomer youth
- Strong conflict management skills with the ability to provide informal mediation, support and mentorship
- Strong computer and professional writing skills; ability to prepare proposals and reports
- Understanding of barriers that exist for Aboriginal and Newcomer youth and their families
- Understanding of resources available for youth within the inner-city
- Understanding of culture, cultural identities and resources within Winnipeg, especially Aboriginal and Newcomer
- Enjoy working with a team and individually
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Ability to provide a current criminal record check and child abuse registry check
- Ability to work afternoons, evenings and some weekends
- Valid Manitoba Drivers Licence
Assets:
- Current First aid, CPR training, ASIST training
- Experience working with youth involved in gangs
- Experience working with youth with addictions or mental health issues(especially FASD)
- Experience working with LGBTTQ* youth
- Understanding of the Youth Criminal Justice System
- Understanding of Restorative Justice theory and practices
- Class 4 Drivers Licence
- People person
Hours and remuneration:
The Employee agrees to fulfill a 37.5 hour work week. SNA agrees to pay $20-$22 per hour for a 37.5 hour work week on a bi-weekly schedule, with hours paid as worked. Required CPP, EI, and tax deductions will be made and employer contributions will be paid. Responsibilities may require flexible hours to be worked including supporting and resourcing staff in the overnight periods.
Note: Currently the project is funded for three years; we would like a candidate that can commit long term to starting up and carrying on this initiative.
