Note: This project is hosted by SNA but will report to a community governance committee.

Spence Neighbourhood Association (SNA) is looking to fill a 37.5 hour per week 24 Hour Safe Space Outreach Worker position. The Outreach worker will work overnight from 10:00pm to 6:00 am Friday, Saturday and school holidays. Outreach workers will be responsible for programming and building relationships with youth at the Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre by engaging high-risk youth with positive activities, performing risk assessments, connecting them to community resources and social services and providing them mentorship. The program uses a wraparound mentorship-based approach to connecting at risk youth to their culture and community.

Note- staff are required to work overnight on Friday, Saturday and school holidays year round.

Primary responsibilities include:

• Mentor and support at-risk youth
• Build relationships with and support youth from the West End of Winnipeg
• Provide crisis support for Outreach youth and their families
• Facilitate and support youth in goal development
• Facilitate and support youth in exploration and identification of their own culture
• Facilitate and support youth in exploration of different cultures
• Connect Outreach youth to supports and resources in the community
• Address basic needs (safe place, food and clothing) of Outreach youth
• Supervise youth completing restorative justice and community service hours
• Complete daily progress reports, statistics and assessments of Outreach youth
• Participate in planning and implementation of monthly family events
• Participate in planning, implementation and supervision of Junior Staff program
• Work a variety of shifts including evenings and weekend overnights
• Volunteer and employment support
• organizing training that support development for youth

Desired qualifications:

• Experience working with at-risk inner-city youth and/or understanding of inner-city issues
• Understanding of barriers that exist for Aboriginal and Newcomer youth and their families
• Experience in mentoring or counselling youth
• Understanding of resources available for youth within the inner-city
• Understanding of culture, cultural identities and resources within Winnipeg, specifically Newcomer and Aboriginal
• Able to work in times of crisis and under pressure
• Self-motivated and able to manage a flexible work schedule
• Enjoy working in a team and individually
• Excellent organizational and administrative skills
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Ability to provide a current criminal record check and child abuse registry check
• Drivers license

Assets:

• Relevant education or experience in one-on-one mentorship, wraparound, social work, community development, inner city studies, or other applicable fields.
• Relevant training including: current First Aid & CPR, ASIST, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
• Creativity and ambition
• Experience working with youth involved in gangs
• Experience working with youth with addictions or mental health issues (especially FASD)
• Experience working with LGBTQ* and other marginalized groups of youth
• Understanding of the Youth Criminal Justice System
• Understanding of Restorative Justice theory and practices

Hours and remuneration:

The Employee agrees to fulfill a 37.5hour work week. SNA agrees to pay $16-$17 per hour for a 37.5 hour work week on a bi-weekly schedule, with hours paid as worked. Required CPP, EI, and tax deductions will be made and employer contributions will be paid. Responsibilities may require flexible hours to be worked (i.e., evenings and weekends). However, regular hours will include overnights Friday, Saturdays and School holidays
