Daniel McIntyre/St. Matthews Community Association (DMSMCA) is a non-profit community renewal organisation. We work with residents and stakeholders towards social, cultural, economic and environmentally sustainable renewal and revitalization of the Daniel McIntyre / St. Matthews neighbourhoods.
Job Objectives
To manage the DMSMCA Summer Kids Program, assist with the management of the DMSMCA community gardens program at the Orioles Community Centre (approximately 30 plots), the Lipton Tot Lot (up to 10 plots) and the Central Mosque Community Garden (10 plots) and Jacob Penner Park Garden (15 plots in conjunction with Spence Neighbourhood Association) and assist with the management of the Summer Community Market.
Job Responsibilities
Kids Summer Program
- Planning, coordinating and providing drop-in art instruction/programming for children aged 6 - 18 with the goal of providing a fun learning experience (programming should be provided once – twice weekly throughout July and August);
- Leading activities, assisting participants, resolving conflicts, distributing materials communicating with parents/guardians, etc.;
- Preparing and organising of the art programming while participants are not present;
- Coordinating the Kids’ Garden program, with kids from our neighbourhood;
- Coordinating and working with kids to paint boxes and various murals for the garden; and
- Assisting with seeding, planting, transplanting, weeding, watering, harvesting.
Community Gardens and Summer Community Market
- Assisting with planning, developing and implementing a garden maintenance plan for the 2016 season;
- Assisting with repairing and painting raised beds and compost bins;
- Assisting with planting, growing, weeding and harvesting the gardens;
- Assisting in liaising with individual gardeners;
- Assisting in helping with the turning and layering of compost bins in the community gardens and
- Assisting with the planning, developing and implementing our Summer Community Market.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
- Experience working with kids, planning, organising and providing art programming
- Knowledge of and experience with organic gardening and composting
- Ability to do physical labour all day
- Strong organisational skills
- Knowledge and experience in Community Development approaches and practices
- Positive attitude, works well independently as well as in a team environment
- Can work individually as well as cooperatively, inclusively and effectively with others
- Aility to work evenings and weekends
- Experience and confidence cycling and access to a bike a must
Assets:
- Knowledge of the Daniel McIntyre/St. Matthews, West Central area and inner city issues
- Experience working with kids, planning, organising and providing art programming
- Knowledge of CED principles
- Ability to speak another language would be an asset
- Providing an up-to-date child abuse registry check and a criminal record check
Other Information:
- Must be between the ages 16-29. DMSMCA is an equity employer; members of a visible minority, of Aboriginal descent, are newcomers to Canada or live in the inner city are encouraged to apply.
Wage: $11.50 / hour
Hours of Work: Up to 32 hours/week; some evening and weekend hours required. This is a 15-week term position.
