Summer Youth Garden Program Facilitator

NorWest Co-op Community Health is looking for a Youth Garden Co-op Facilitator for the NorWest Community Food Centre. The NorWest Community Food Centre is a new initiative which offers a shared meal program, cooking, gardening and advocacy programs that improve access to healthy food in a way that maintains dignity and builds community.

The Youth Garden Co-op Facilitator will be responsible for leading a team of local youth to manage urban agriculture activities at and around the Community Food Centre site during the summer months. The candidate will support youth participants to use and maintain the community gardening space. This dynamic position will involve teaching hands on gardening skills, facilitation of garden and food based educational activities, skill building activities and connecting participating youth to social supports as necessary. Other tasks may include supporting gardening activities in Gilbert Park, operating pizza-making sessions at an outdoor bake oven, conducting garden tours, organizing workshops, community outreach and promotion and additional garden maintenance as required. As Youth Garden Co-op Facilitator the successful candidate will act as an onsite mentor to the youth; supporting and educating them as they learn to run the garden.

*Note: Applicants must be between the ages of 18-30 years old and returning to school. This position is contingent on funding. Length of contract TBD.

Qualifications

  • Experience with program development, group facilitation, community outreach
  • Experience in gardening (through paid employment or volunteer work)
  • Ability to work outdoors, physical labour necessary, in hot or inclement weather
  • Experience working in a leadership capacity with youth, volunteers, community members
  • Demonstrated ability to work with children and youth
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities
  • Able to work weekends and evenings as required
  • Experience multi-tasking in a busy environment

Training provided

  • Introduction to the process of developing and promoting a co-operative project
  • Learning the co-operative philosophy
  • Gaining hands on experience on the social and economic impact of a co-operative
