The West Central Women’s Resource Centre (WCWRC) provides services and programming to women and families in the West Central neighbourhood of Winnipeg.

WCWRC is seeking a Kitchen Manager who has the ability to create an inclusive kitchen environment, a passion for helping build our community kitchen and desire and experience with using food to create social change. Reporting to the Employment and Education Coordinator, the Kitchen Manager will coordinate of our lunch program, community garden and nutrition programming.

Start Date:  May 30, 2016
Salary: $15-$17 per hour, commensurate with experience
Time requirement:     25-28 hours per week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday)
Closing date:  May 16, 2016

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Employment and Education Coordinator, the Kitchen Manger is responsible for:

  • Supervising, supporting and training a diverse team of volunteers
  • Planning and preparing healthy lunches three times a week
  • Implementing & maintaining health and safety standards
  • Managing kitchen inventory, grocery shopping and Winnipeg Harvest pickups
  • Planning and facilitating workshops for the community on food security issues, cooking, healthy eating and gardening
  • Creating and facilitating a planting, maintenance and harvest plan designed to maximize community participation
  • Working with team members to create a positive environment

Skills and Qualifications

Essential

  • Experience with daily cooking for large numbers of people
  • Experience supervising and working with volunteers from diverse backgrounds including those with low English levels
  • Knowledge of food security issues in the inner city
  • Experience with gardening basics and a willingness to grow knowledge
  • Strong planning and facilitation skills
  • Hold or willingness to obtain Food Handler Certificate, Criminal Reference Check and Child Abuse Checks
  • Demonstrated understanding of marginalization, diversity and inclusion framework
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to take initiative and improvise in the kitchen

Preferred

  • Food transformation (canning and preserving, etc.) is an asset
  • Class 5 Driver’s license and access to a vehicle is strongly preferred
  • Experience working within the non-profit sector
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong understanding of empowerment and harm reduction philosophies
  • Self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision
