About the Opportunity

MLIB is currently seeking a highly motivated, organized and talented Community Business Development Officer to join our Economic Development Team.

Based in Prince George, you will assist MLIB and our members to establish and expand business. With lots of opportunity for business development and local employment, this will be a rewarding role that will see you play a significant role in the overall well-being of the MLIB and our membership.  

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying new business opportunities; 
  • Providing assistance with the preparation of business plans, including market analysis, economic opportunities, product development and identification of target markets;
  • Identifying management capabilities and recommending training requirements;
  • Determining start-up costs, forecasting sales and conducting a break even analysis;
  • Assisting with the preparation of pro-forma financial statements to gain financing;
  • Assisting with marketing planning;
  • Conducting financial analysis on proposed business plans and opportunities;
  • Establishing, building and maintaining client relationships;
  • Providing advice on licensing, taxation and business related requirements;
  • Conducting site visits and monitoring business results;
  • Providing after care services, such as assisting with bookkeeping, establishing cash controls, and providing training;
  • Maintaining files and records on band and member businesses and economic development opportunities; and 
  • Completing relevant administrative tasks.   

The successful candidate will ideally have a Bachelor of Commerce/Business Administration, however a combination of relevant training and experience may be considered. Most importantly, you will demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Community Economic Development theories and practices;
  • Local, regional and provincial economic development potential and opportunities;
  • Financial management and analysis;
  • Business promotion;
  • Office administration;
  • Relevant band and municipal legislation, policies and procedures; and 
  • The economic, cultural and political environment. 

Superior written and verbal communication skills are essential for success in this role, as is the ability to multi-task and manage your time effectively. As a strong negotiator and mediator, you will have proven ability to foster, mentor and manage key relationships and a cohesive team environment. You will also have proven ability to effectively analyze business plans and make sound decisions based on your experience, knowledge and judgement.   

This role is well suited to a fair, respectful and consistent professional who accepts responsibility and takes ownership of tasks. Highly organized, creative and versatile, you will also exhibit strong strategic vision and excellent problem solving skills.    

Please note that a valid driver's licence and a reliable means of transportation are requirements of this role. Preference may be given to candidates of Aboriginal descent.
