Construction Trades Trainer

You are here

Motivate and Empower

You are experienced across multi-construction trades with the vision and empathy necessary to lead a crew of aspiring pre-apprentices. You are passionate about your craft and take pride in sharing your skills with those willing to learn. You are excited about playing an integral role in a growing business that creates opportunities for training and employment for those that need it most.

If this is you, you will find this role compelling.

Who are we? We are Building Up. We are a registered pre-apprenticeship program and non-profit contractor that trains and employs Torontonians with multiple barriers to employment to undertake construction contracts. Our primary line of business is installing water efficient retrofits in residential buildings – primarily affordable housing and coops. Our services include toilet, showerhead and faucet replacement, on-the-job skills training as well as in-class supportive programming.

Your job would be to oversee the installation of all retrofit projects. You will act as the foreman to guide, motivate and supervise a crew of trainees. You will provide your seal of approval to every installation, in every unit of every building that we work in. You will respond to both technical and interpersonal issues, and you will do everything in your power to create opportunities for trainees to build skills and experience in the trades.

You will also facilitate the trades training portion of our in-class training. It is important to have a broad range of skills across multiple trades. You are joining a small and dynamic team and will become the tradesperson we all look to when taking on new projects.

This is a full-time salaried position . Our program is structured to alternate between 4-weeks of installations and 4-weeks of in-class training. The workload is heavier during installation periods, and lighter during time away from site. You will have regular tasks during in-class training.

Position Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and estimating the materials and labour requirements for individual contracts.
  • Train, supervise and co-ordinate trainees in the removal and installation of water efficient toilets, showerheads and faucets.
  • Mentor trainees and instill an environment of punctuality, respect, and teamwork.
  • Coordinate in-class introductory trades training.
  • Enhance training with applied hands-on experience on the job-site.
  • Assist with the selection of trainees.
  • Transport all necessary tools to the jobsite as needed.
  • Establish work schedules and procedures, and plan plumbing activities.
  • Prepare performance appraisals for trainees and work with the team to resolve work-related issues.
  • Perform water savings assessments in new customers’ buildings.
  • Ensure trainees are accessing supports to overcome challenges that arise.
  • Assist with program reporting as instructed by the director.
  • Maintain records of work and time sheets.

You are ideal for this role if you have these skills: customer focus, entrepreneurial, leadership & facilitation, advanced plumbing knowledge, basic understanding of many trades, punctuality, interpersonal skills, goal achievement, resiliency, flexibility, and personal accountability.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience across multiple trades
  • Ability to manage a budget, schedule, order/receive materials, train and direct.
  • Advanced knowledge of toilet, showerhead and faucet installation, leek prevention and customer service.
  • Exceptional facilitation and leadership skills, particularly with disadvantaged community members.
  • Ability to motivate, train, and direct staff and encourage a team spirit.
  • Knowledge of the needs and barriers of unemployed individuals with sensitivity towards cultural and economic differences.
  • Access to a vehicle to transport tools and crewmembers, valid G driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.
  • In-depth knowledge of Employment Standards, Human Rights Code, OH&SA.
