24 Hour Safe Space Outreach Worker (Full Time)

Spence Neighbourhood Association is looking to fill a FULL TIME (37.5 hour per week) 24 hour Safe Space Outreach Worker position. The Outreach worker will work overnight from 11:00pm to 7:00 am Friday, Saturday and School holidays.  Outreach workers will be responsible for  programming and building relationships with youth at the Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre by engaging high-risk youth with positive activities, performing risk assessments, connecting them to community resources and social services and providing them mentorship. The program uses a wraparound mentorship based approach to connecting at risk youth to their culture and community. 

*Note* staff are required to work overnight on Friday, Saturday and School holidays (winter, spring and summer break, long weekends, etc.) with some flexibility and support from West End 24 Hour Staff team.

Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Mentor and support at-risk youth as a positive adult role model
  • Build relationships with and support youth from the West End of Winnipeg
  • Provide crisis support for Outreach youth and their families
  • Facilitate and support youth in goal development
  • Facilitate and support youth in exploration and identification of their own culture
  • Prepare meals for youth accessing the 24 Hour Safe Space
  • Connect Outreach youth to supports and resources in the community
  • Address basic needs (safe place, food and clothing) of Outreach youth
  • Supervise youth completing restorative justice and community service hours
  • Complete daily progress reports, statistics and assessments of Outreach youth
  • Participate in planning and implementation of monthly family events
  • Participate in planning, implementation and supervision of Junior Staff program
  • Work a variety of shifts including evenings, weekend overnights, and day shifts as needed
  • Volunteer and employment support
  • Organizing training that support development for youth
  • Transport youth

 Desired qualifications: 

  • Must be a ‘team-player,’ who cares for others and contributes positively to the workplace culture
  • Must have strong communication skills and committed to acting with professionalism
  • Experience working with at-risk inner-city youth and/or understanding of inner-city issues
  • Understanding of barriers that exist for Indigenous and Newcomer youth and their families
  • Experience in mentoring or counselling youth, including youth in crisis situations
  • Understanding of resources available for youth within the inner-city
  • Understanding of culture, cultural identities and resources (specifically Newcomer and Indigenous)
  • Able to manage a flexible work schedule, work in times of crisis, and under pressure
  • Must keep accurate files, incident reports, attendance and other data pertaining to the project
  • Knowledge of ‘Google Environment’ (ie. Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets etc.) 
  • Ability to provide a current criminal record check, child abuse registry check
  • Must have a Class 5 Drivers license and be a safe, competent driver willing to transport youth in agency vehicles
  • Must approach and view all WE24 participants with a “see-the-good” lens

Assets:

  • Relevant education or experience in one-on-one mentorship, wraparound model, social work, community development, inner city studies, lived-life experience, or other applicable fields. 
  • Relevant training including: current First Aid & CPR, ASIST, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
  • Creativity and ambition 
  • Experience working with youth involved in or vulnerable to gangs and gang recruitment
  • Experience working with youth involved in or vulnerable to sexual exploitation
  • Experience working with youth with addictions and/or mental health issues
  • Experience working with LGBTQ* community and other marginalized groups of youth
  • Understanding of the Youth Criminal Justice System, Child and Family Services, WPS, etc.
  • Understanding of Restorative Justice theory and practices

Note: This project is hosted by SNA but will report to a community governance committee.

Hours and remuneration: The Employee agrees to fulfill a 37.5hour work week. SNA agrees to pay $17 per hour for a 37.5 hour work week on a bi-weekly schedule, with hours paid as worked. Required CPP, EI, and tax deductions will be made and employer contributions will be paid. Responsibilities may require flexible hours to be worked (i.e., evenings and weekends). However, regular hours will include overnights Friday, Saturdays and School holidays.
