The Lake Winnipeg Foundation is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented individual to join our team in the position of community-based monitoring co-ordinator. Based out of Winnipeg, the position includes travel throughout southern Manitoba. This one-year term position (with possibility of extension) is 32-40 hours per week, with a salary range of $30,400 – $40,000.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the programs director, the community-based monitoring co-ordinator will support the development and operation of Manitoba’s community-based monitoring (CBM) network. Responsibilities include:

Volunteer recruitment and training

• Participate in CBM network steering committee meetings to understand network priorities and resource allocation
• Develop and maintain a volunteer sampler recruitment program targeting citizens in watersheds of priority concern throughout southern Manitoba
• Organize, co-ordinate and facilitate tailored training opportunities as needed for all network partners, including in-the-field training throughout southern Manitoba
• As required, contribute to funding applications to support Manitoba’s CBM network

Sampling and analysis

• Maintain an up-to-date relational database containing all CBM information relevant to the collection of credible phosphorus data by citizen scientists
• Regularly review and update network procedures and protocols, with input from network partners, science advisors and community volunteers
• Manage and maintain network resources (e.g. sampling equipment, consumables)
• Manage sampling quality control and quality assurance procedures with all samplers
• Co-ordinate sampling activities of volunteer samplers to catch all major flow events throughout the field season
• Conduct field sampling as required to strengthen the value and credibility of the CBM dataset
• Conduct phosphorus analyses on all CBM samples in a certified water chemistry lab, as necessary

Data interpretation and communication

• Analyze and interpret CBM data with support from network science advisors
• In partnership with the Lake Winnipeg Basin Information Network, ensure all CBM data is presented online, using accessible and compelling data visualization tools
• Support LWF staff and volunteers in sharing data and interpretation with project partners.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will have:

• Bachelors or Master’s degree in Science, Environmental Science or Natural Resources Management and 2 years’ relevant work experience
• Demonstrated field and lab experience in water science, chemistry, and/or environmental monitoring
• Strong understanding of scientific methodology and ecological principles
• Demonstrated knowledge of data management and statistical analyses
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Exceptional time-management, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, event-driven environment
• Strong organizational skills and proven attention to detail
• Creativity, adaptability and problem-solving skills
• Competent in computer word-processing, spreadsheet and database management, electronic mail and online communication tools
• Experience in GIS mapping and web design an asset
• Experience in project and volunteer management an asset
• Experience working in the non-profit sector an asset
