The West Central Women's Resource Centre (WCWRC) provides services and programming to women and families in the West Central neighbourhood of Winnipeg. The Centre works from empowerment, inclusion and harm reduction philosophies to support women with concerns such as housing, income security and healing from domestic violence. WCWRC runs specific programs and services to meet the needs of our newcomer and indigenous community members as well as events to bring communities together to promote cross-cultural understanding.

WCWRC is seeking a Community Engagement Support Worker to complete a 15 week term. Reporting to the Director of Community Engagement, the Community Engagement Support Worker will work with WCWRC's drop-in to develop, plan and coordinate summer programs, events and fieldtrips for women and families in the West Central Community.

Start Date: May 15
Salary: $13.00
Time requirement: 30 hours per week
Closing date: April 28, 2017

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet with community members to identify event and fieldtrip ideas
  • Plan and coordinate a variety of community events that reflect the diversity of our community
  • Conduct ppromotion and outreach to the community and partner organizations;
  • Assist with community meetings, drop in events and the inclusion committee
  • Be available with discretion, for other assigned duties as required
  • Attend meetings and workshops as directed by the supervisor.

Drop In

  • Create a welcoming atmosphere in the Drop-In for everyone
  • Answer and direct calls appropriately
  • Be fully aware of WCWRC activities, programming and staff in order to direct inquires appropriately

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Some post-secondary education
  • Demonstrated ability to work within an inclusion framework
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to work effectively with diverse individuals including indigenous groups and newcomers with low English levels
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Presentation and facilitation skills
  • Well-developed computer skills including the use of Microsoft office and outlook
  • Professional and responsible with sensitive and confidential issues
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • Have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act2 and,
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Existing knowledge of the issues of marginalization
  • Self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision
