Neighbourhood Oral History/Resource Centre Coordinator

12-week term full-time (30 hours/week) position

DMSMCA is a non-profit community renewal organization. We work with residents and stakeholders towards social, cultural, economic and environmentally sustainable renewal and revitalization of the Daniel McIntyre / St. Matthews neighbourhoods.

Job Objectives and Responsibilities:

  1. Neighbourhood Summer Oral History Project – To develop and coordinate an oral history project in our neighbourhood to celebrate the rich history and cultural diversity of the Daniel McIntyre/St. Matthews Neighbourhoods Tasks will include:
    • Researching the history of the neighbourhood, particularly focusing on the cultural, historical, architectural and various individual histories and stories in the neighbourhood;
    • Reaching out to residents, businesses and community organisations in the neighbourhood to help identify local neighbourhood gems to highlight as well as to participate in the project;
    • Develop promotional materials for the project;
    • Develop and Conduct walking tours through the neighbourhood, in collaboration with the Oral History Committee, individual residents, businesses and organisations in the community;
    • Assist in fundraising for longer term project (identify funding sources, draft proposals, etc.).

Tasks will include:

  1. Resource Centre Coordinator – To staff the Resource Centre, welcoming and assisting people as they come into the Centre.
    • Welcoming and directing people as they come in;
    • Research available resources (pamphlets, books, videos, etc.) to place in the Resource Centre;
    • Reach out to local community organisations/agencies to build up materials available in the Resource Centre as well as to develop a referral contact list/ manual;
    • Assist with the development of informational materials to promote the Resource Centre;
    • Assist with the organising of programming at the Resource Centre e.g. housing maintenance workshops, gardening workshops, summer youth programming, etc.

Qualification, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Strong research knowledge and skills;
  • Background in community outreach, community based planning and community initiatives implementation;
  • Strong collaboration and networking skills;
  • Project Management;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong organisational skills;
  • Good knowledge of desk top publishing /design etc. (posters, flyers, newsletter);
  • Strong computer skills;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Knowledge and experience in Community Development approaches and practices;
  • Experience working with volunteers;
  • Understanding and appreciation of inner city communities;
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

Assets:

  • Knowledge of the Daniel McIntyre St. Matthews Community (preference given to DM/SM residents);
  • Valid driver’s license and occasional access to a vehicle is an asset but not necessary; and
  • Knowledge of CED principles.

Other Information:

  • Must be between the ages 16-30. This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs, Service Canada. The funding stipulates that the employee must be between 16 and 30 years of age at the time of hire; and have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year.

Wage: $13.00 / hour
Hours of Work: Up to 30 hours/week; some evening and weekend hours required. This is a 12-week term position.
