Under the supervision of the Asset and Capacity Building Programs Manager, the Newcomer Driver Education Specialist (NDES) is a detail oriented, efficient and resourceful individual with strong interpersonal, organizational and administrative skills, welcoming attitude and asset-based approach. This staff is a ‘people person’ who is creative, and possesses exceptional facilitation, adult education and capacity building skills. The ideal candidate will be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment prioritizing tasks and executing them to a high degree of accuracy.

Duties       

Under the supervision of the ACBP Manager, the NDES will deliver the Newcomer Driver Education Program (NDEP) to the highest quality, undertaking the following tasks:

NDEP Program Delivery

  • Employ outreach strategies to recruit qualified newcomer trainees based on pre-set criteria
  • Welcome and interact with newcomer participants
  • Assist participants with barriers to overcome hurdles (schedule conflict, ID issues, language, etc.)
  • Provide English as Additional Language (EAL) friendly in-class and in-car training
  • Undertake all program activities with absolute integrity
  • Inspect vehicles and space/facilities for safety issues and seek corrective action according to procedures
  • Collaborate with IRCOM’s Community Resource Program and others to identify possible candidates
  • Work with team members to create a positive environment
  • Evaluate the Newcomer Driver Education Program as planned
  • Facilitate computer access to enable participants to successfully complete written test
  • Ensure accountability to participants by setting clear expectations and being consistent in follow-through

NDEP Administration

  • Communicate closely with MPI (the oversight body for the drivers’ program) to ensure that MPI guidelines are being met and all monitoring and evaluation processes are in place
  • Ensure accurate program records including participant attendance, registration, waivers, etc. are kept
  • In consultation with the ACBP Manager, administer the budget for the Newcomer Driver Education Program monitoring cash flow, coding and ensuring all expenses are in accordance with the approved budget
  • Monitor the collection of registration fees in compliance with MPI requirements
  • Ensure the driver training vehicle is maintained in safe working order
  • Develop and maintain in-car and in-class driver training schedules
  • Communicate the program progress to MPI regularly
  • Communicate program plans with volunteers, participants and staff well in advance of program delivery
  • Attend meetings, MPI trainings and other organizational trainings as needed
  • Purchase program supplies/snacks when required
  • Develop monthly activity plans including: full activity descriptions, space, snack plans and designated roles and responsibilities for support staff
  • Coordinate resources (space, computers, vehicle use, childcare, etc.)that could be utilized in the delivery of the Newcomer Driver Education Program
  • Fulfill all reporting requirements as determined by funders
  • Provide support and supervision to volunteers
  • Undergo an annual performance review
  • Other duties as assigned

Communiny Partnerships & Networks

  • Work with the ACBP Manager to develop strategic partnerships that will benefit both the Newcomer Driver Education Program participants and the wider community

Qualifications (must read MPI’s Driver Instructors Permit requirements attached)

  • Must have a valid Driver Instructor’s permit
  • Exceptional facilitation, mentoring and capacity building skills
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field is an asset
  • Demonstrated problem solving, conflict resolution and mediation skills
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills
  • Strong planning, organizational, leadership and communication skills
  • Direct experience creating and maintaining accurate and detailed records
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts including evenings and weekends
  • Experience working in community development or the not-for-profit sector is an asset

Hours of work

This is a full-time position for a maximum of 37.5 hours per week. This is a term position until March 31, 2018 with a possibility of extension pending renewal of funding and satisfactory performance. The Newcomer Driver Education Specialist’s hours involve a combination of regular business hours, Monday to Friday as well as a significant number of weekend and evening hours.

Other

  • The starting salary for this position is $42,165
  • Selected candidate must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
