Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the After School Program Managers, the Homework Education for Youth (HEY) Program Support Worker is a competent individual committed to IRCOM’s vision and values. They will be responsible in providing individual assistance to students with English as an Additional Language and moderate learning difficulties to support learning and to help eliminate the educational barriers for newcomer youth.  This position is integral to the success of the After School, HEY Program. Program Support:

  • Consult with teacher/ASP Staff to determine individual strengths and challenges of student(s)
  • Work one-on-one or in small groups with high needs EAL newcomer students
  • Help the ASP Teacher with programming by modeling lessons and providing hands on activities
  • Model effective teaching strategies
  • Work closely with ASP Program Managers, the ASP teacher and the ASP volunteers to help the student(s) strengthen their oral skills and work towards better integrating into the classroom
  • Provide support to newcomer students adjusting to the classroom environment and routines
  • Develop relationships with newcomer children and youth and their families and be a positive role model
  • Assist in tracking and evaluating data, collecting data on indicators of success
  • Track daily attendance hours of youth in program
  • Assist in the coordinating informal  assessments related to learning
  • Collect and prepare learning materials, questionnaires and use assistive technology to assist student learning
  • Interpretation and/or translation if applicable/ as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of the immigration process and challenges with the school system and learning that newcomer youth, both refugees and immigrants might face, knowledge and experience of teaching utilizing an integrated approach
  • Demonstrated ability to implement effective academic programs and behavioral strategies in various settings
  • Strong knowledge and ability to teach math and science, particularly chemistry, pre-calculus and applied mathematics.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team and collaboratively with other staff and outside agencies
  • Strong written and oral English communication skills
  • Must be open-minded, resourceful, highly motivated, creative and independent
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to supporting and empowering the newcomer community through previous volunteering / community involvement
  • Knowledge of core Provincial curricula and ability to support newcomer students to succeed within that curricula is an asset
  • Experience or training in resource, special education and/or counseling an asset
  • Must undergo Criminal Record Check, as well as have a clear Child Abuse Registry Check

Hours of work

This is a part time position. The hours of work will be between 1:00-9:00pm Monday to Friday; however some evenings and weekends may be required as per the needs of IRCOM programs.

Other

The pay range per hour for this position begins at $16.00/hr.
