Summer Youth Care Practitioner

Lord Roberts Community Centre’s (LRCC) Summer Youth Care Staff are responsible for creating a safe, engaging environment for all youth attending the LRCC Drop-In Summer Camp.  They will interact with participants, families, and the public in a cheerful and welcoming manner. It is important for Youth Care Staff follow all health and safety guidelines while working, and relay any pertinent information to the General Manager in a timely manner.

Responsibilities:

Children & Youth Activities
  • Greet all visitors to the community centre in a friendly manner
  • Answer any questions from participants, families or the public
  • Create fun games and activities for children aged 6-12
  • Supervise participants, ensuring the safety of all
  • Calm conflicts between youth when they arise
  • Ensure that all consent forms are signed
  • Ensure all equipment for activities is prepared and in good working order
  • Keep statistics on how many youth are accessing the program each day
Food preparation
  • Prepare and serve snack to all participants
  • Ensure that all food safety rules are followed
Inventory

Alert General Manager of:

  • any items running low
  • needed items for all activities and games (i.e. balls, bus tickets, art supplies)
Cleaning 
  • Ensure that all spaces are tidy upon leaving the area
  • Supervise all participants to prevent litter/rubbish left
  • Encourage youth to wash hands before eating
  • Cleaning used areas and items at the end of each day
Miscellaneous duties
  • First aid when needed
  • Contacting parents if needed (i.e discipline problems, medical, etc…)
  • Wearing assigned employer t-shirts or identifying clothing
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and competencies

  • Must be currently enrolled in school, some college or university preferred.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • Basic math skills and money handling
  • Able to entertain and play with children and youth in a safe and supervised environment
  • Knowledge of safe, fun activities for youth in Winnipeg
  • Able to follow instructions
  • Food Handler Certification an asset
  • First Aid/CPR Certification an asset
  • Must be able to pass a Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check

Salary

Hourly wage begins at $11.15 per hour.

This is a short-term, contract position until August 31, 2018
