Pollock's Hardware has been open since 1922 and is a North End institution. In 2008 Pollock’s became a consumer co-operative. Today Pollock’s serves a membership of nearly 3,500 people and organizations. Products range from Contractor-grade materials to everyday home maintenance supplies, toys and unique housewares.

Pollock’s is offering an entrepreneurial self-starting person an opportunity for experience managing an entire small business enterprise. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the general manager is responsible for executing all aspects of the business plan, including staffing, financial management and reporting, sales and marketing, media, inventory, services, partnerships and facility management.

The ideal candidate will have supervisory retail experience and familiarity with small business fundamentals. Passion for home repairs and related subjects is important. Ability to advise customers on product base through trades experience or firsthand experience with the products is an asset. Pollock’s is a community staple – a friendly, customer-centric personality is a must.

  • Familiarity with point-of-sale systems (including reporting) and computer technology
  • Ability to advise as to best use of most products sold in store

  • Established organizational techniques for managing staffing, inventory and more

  • Ability to work independently, self-motivate and solve problems
  • Interest in helping foster new and existing community partnerships
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends
  • Valid class 5 driver’s License & good driving record
  • Minimum physical requirements for this position include the ability to stand for an extended period of time and ability to move and handle boxes of merchandise and fixtures throughout the store, which entails lifting

Responsibilities

The General Manager profitably manages the Co-op through positively influencing sales and controlling expenses. They define performance standards for the store and communicate those expectations to staff while continuously evaluating performance related to those standards. They directly supervise, develop, and evaluate all staff.

On both a day-to-day and yearly basis, the General Manager is expected to:

  • Achieve or exceed store sales goals by executing marketing plans and co-op strategies
  • Build brand awareness and promote company image through partnerships and activities within the community, and by overseeing grassroots marketing activities
  • Drive customer service level throughout the store to provide an excellent customer experience
  • Build and maintain morale through respectful supervisory practices
  • Execute policies and procedures according to Board direction and follow all federal, provincial, and municipal laws and regulations, including those relating to safety standards
  • Reinforce a culture of safety within the store
  • Ensure fiscal prudence and accuracy of store by keeping records and securing store assets
  • Manage payroll and expenses. Ensure payroll is managed to budget and that schedules optimize staffing with a focus on customer experience and best overall store operation.
  • Lead staff in providing a clean, neat, and well-stocked place to shop. Keep merchandise in stock with correct presentation and register-ready.
  • Manage all staff performance, write schedules, and select and train new staff.
  • Control and maintain store security including alarms, call lists, keys, and safe combinations.
  • Participate cooperatively with the Board in developing and implementing business plans, strategies, budgets and events with the goal of meeting or exceeding profit targets.
