Reporting to the Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation (CNRC) board of directors, the executive director provides leadership and support to inspire neighbourhood renewal in Chalmers. The 2019-23 Chalmers Neighbourhood Plan and the 5-Year Housing Plan provide an overall direction for the executive director, who works collaboratively with Neighbourhoods Alive! (NA!), local organizations, residents and key community stakeholders.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The executive director will have overall responsibility for ongoing operations and management of the NRC in Chalmers, consisting of CNRC and Chalmers Community Renewal Initiative Inc. Duties generally fall within the following categories:

  9. NRC Board of Directors

STRATEGIC PLANNING AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Promote and implement the 5-Year Neighbourhood Plan for Chalmers
  • Promote and implement the 5-Year Chalmers Housing Plan
  • Coordinate all aspects related to the annual plan including the annual general meeting
  • Coordinate and implement the Neighbourhood Development Agreement, Small Grants Fund and Neighbourhood Renewal Fund in partnership with NA!
  • Ensure ongoing community engagement process in addressing neighbourhood priorities

NRC POLICY DEVELOPMENT

  • Coordinate the ongoing development of by-laws and governance/policy processes in consultation with NA! and board representatives
  • Coordinate the ongoing development of administrative system and processes to support effective organizational operations

COMMUNITY-LED DEVELOPMENT

  • Coordinate ongoing development of the annual action plan, in responding to the priorities identified within the 5-Year Neighbourhood Plan for Chalmers
  • Report to the board of directors on the administration and progress of NRC projects
  • Provide community feedback on neighbourhood projects in consultation with NA! and board representatives  
  • Maintain effective working relationships with partner organizations, funders and community members in developing programs and services

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

  • Develop human resource policies that support the ongoing development of a motivated and respectful workplace
  • Coordinate all human resource aspects, including job development, hiring and supervision

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Responsible for the financial management of all aspects related to CNRC and CCRI
    • Monitoring revenue and expenditure to maintain the viability of the organization
    • Coordinated efforts with board-approved auditors, accountants and bookkeepers
    • Preparing and adhering to budgets while ensuring that all payroll standards are maintained, including Canada Revenue Agency and Workers Compensation
    • Increasing the CNRC sustainability through diversity of funding and partnership development

COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES

  • Develop and implement effective neighbourhood communication that focus on print copy and social media strategies
  • Raise the profile of NRC and community partners while keeping the neighbourhood informed on local opportunities and initiatives related to the 5-Year Neighbourhood Plan for Chalmers

COMMUNITY RELATIONS

  • Ensure the NRC is responsive to the community and reflective of diverse local interests
  • Oversee the development of programs and initiatives for CNRC and CCRI which respond to local priorities
  • Create and sustain inclusive, community-led approaches and practices to support the five-year neighbourhood and housing plans

OFFICE AND ASSET MANAGEMENT

  • Support the ongoing relations needed to maintain an NRC office in Chalmers
  • Support the neighbourhood renewal, revitalization and redevelopment related to local asset development and management

NRC BOARD OF DIRECTORS

  • Support the work of an effective board of directors for CNRC and CCRI
  • Assist the board in decision-making, meeting requirements and arranging for training or expertise as required

EDUCATION

  • Undergraduate university degree in the social sciences or business administration fields
  • Post-secondary education in community economic development or other field relevant to the leadership and management of a community development organization
  • Other combination of education and related community experiences may be considered

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum three years managerial experience in the non-profit sector
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and program development
  • Demonstrated experience in partnering with community-based organizations
  • Demonstrated competency in developing budgets, financial planning and reporting
  • Demonstrated competency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Demonstrated experience in working with a volunteer board of directors
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing funding proposals
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community-led development principles and practices
  • Demonstrated ability to direct, support and mentor staff
  • Strong leadership, supervisory, team building and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with residents, volunteers, elected officials, business leaders, private funders and administration

SALARY

  • Salary range of $52,000 - $62,000, depending on experience, skills and education
  • 40 hours/week with evening and weekend work required
  • Additional compensation includes professional development, vehicle allowance, vacation leave, sick leave, banked and flex time, maternal/parental leave

CONSIDERATIONS

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including vulnerable sector), Adult Abuse Registry Check and Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle
  • Start date of Monday June 3, 2019 with a primary office location of 180 Poplar Avenue
