Local Investment Toward Employment (LITE) creates job and training experiences for people living in Winnipeg’s inner city neighbourhoods who have complex and multiple barriers to employment. In addition to creating jobs, we offer action-oriented economic development opportunities for individuals, social enterprises and businesses located in Winnipeg’s inner city throughout the year. LITE is a partnership-based organization, working with 20+ community-based organizations, as well as independent contractors, volunteer associations and businesses.
LITE is also a volunteer-powered organization, working with 150-200 volunteers per year. A major component of LITE’s volunteer program works with people experiencing barriers to employment to learn administrative and communication skills in the office context, working with volunteers to set realistic scheduling and tasks.
LITE holds at least 2 major events per year, up to 6 smaller events per year and many smaller educational activities throughout the year.
Reporting to LITE’s Executive Director, the Volunteer and Events Coordinator serves as the go-to person for all our volunteers and helps bring LITE’s events and activities to life, engaging our community partners, supporters and the general public.
Volunteer Coordination
- Recruit, orient, and train LITE’s various volunteers.
- Work with staff to determine volunteer needs and tasks.
- Oversee volunteer scheduling and recognition activities.
- Create job postings for volunteer duties and manage applications.
Events and Education Activities
- Lead the coordination of LITE’s annual fundraiser, the Wild Blueberry Pancake Breakfast, and holiday market.
- Work alongside staff and volunteers to plan and execute events throughout the year with a set budget.
- Prepare email and social media messaging to various audiences on upcoming events/educational activities.
Qualifications
- Experience coordinating events or volunteers
- Experience providing training to staff or volunteers
- Experience managing a busy schedule
- Tack and non-judgemental attitude
- Great interpersonal skills
- Ability to prioritize and delegate tasks within tight timeframes
- Knowledge of Microsoft office; Adobe Creative Suite is a bonus
- Strong communications skills, written and oral
- Friendly, positive attitude, motivated to learn and works well in a team environment
- Experience working in a non-profit environment and with boards, volunteers and committees are assets
- A valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle would be an asset
- Experience or knowledge of multiple and complex job barriers as it affect people experiencing poverty in Winnipeg.
- Knowledge as well as willingness to learn about employment barriers, and the role that trauma, gender, race and colonialism play in creating employment barriers
This is a 15-20hr/week position, flexible. Regular office hours are 8:30/9AM to 3:30/4PM, Monday to Friday, with flexible start/end times for the right candidate. Early-morning, evening and weekend work will be required throughout the year (planned in advance).
Wage range is $15-17/hr, commensurate with experience. A health benefits package is available after three months of employment.
