IRCOM Childcare Program
Position Objective and Summary
The Music Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing music and movement programming that enhances the learning environment where newcomer children and their guardians feel safe, loved, cared for, welcome, supported, and included. Together, the Music Teacher and the Child Care team create an environment that shows respect for all cultures and abilities.
The IRCOM Child Care Program provides on-site quality childcare to newcomer children as their family members attend IRCOM programs at various sites. The program is supervised by the Child Care Program Manager. Daily supervision and support of the Music Teacher is provided by the Early Childhood Educator (ECE2) on-site.

DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:
Holistic Program Development and Implementation
- Plan and implement age appropriate activities that support and promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of newcomer children aged six (6) months to six (6) years of age
- Plan and provide a language rich cognitive and experiential learning environment including music vocabulary and concepts such as pitch, tempo, rhyming and rhythm
- Provide children with opportunities to enhance their attention building skills as well as taking turns and participating in a group setting
- Provide a program that allows all children to participate actively at their individual skill levels
Relationship Development
- Develop nurturing and trusting relationships with children in program
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with co-workers and parents
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completed training in music education (specialization with pre-school children is an asset)
- Two (2) years’ experience working with pre-school children
- Ability to effectively work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Strong communication skills in English (written and oral)
- Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of newcomer families
- Positive attitude and friendly manner
- Ability to work well in a team
- Strength, stamina and ability to work with active, young children
- Knowledge of a language other than English is a strong asset
- Newcomer and refugee experience is an asset
- International education/experience is valued
- Upon acceptance, candidate must produce a valid Criminal Record Check, and clear Child Abuse Registry Check before being able to work with children
CONTRACT DETAILS:
The chosen candidate will be engaged as an independent contractor. The successful applicant will be required to provide their own teaching tools, equipment, computer hardware and software. Limited office supplies and some simple musical and rhythmic instruments will be provided. Compensation will be provided according to the contract budget based on agreed upon deliverables and time frames and upon receipt of invoice for services rendered.
Music classes will be 35-45 minutes long and take place once a week for 36 weeks from October 2019 through June 30, 2020 (excluding winter and spring break.) Classes will occur between Monday and Thursday, either morning or afternoon.
