Raising the Roof is a leading national charity that helps prevent and alleviate homelessness across Canada through social enterprise. Raising the Roof operates Reside, a signature program and social enterprise which acquires and renovates vacant or under-utilized homes, turning them into affordable housing for low-income families across Canada. We also operate our annual Toque campaign, raising awareness about homelessness through selling toques and hats to individuals across Canada.
Job Profile:
We are seeking a Resource Development and Communications Manager who can lead the organization’s fundraising and communication efforts, in collaboration with the Executive Director, and the Project Director, the Reside Program and the Toque campaign team. The Resource Development and Communications Manager will lead all fundraising activities related to both the Reside program and the Toque campaign, and will lead the organization’s communication efforts, supported by the Program Coordinator.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Fundraising
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to create a fund development plan for Reside and the Toque Campaign, identifying opportunities for major gifts, corporate donations, grant solicitations, government funding, sponsorships and in-kind donations
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and the Director of Finance on the development of the organization’s budget and track fundraising revenue and expenses over time
- Identify prospective donors, sponsors and financial supporters for the Reside program and the Toque Campaign
- Prepare and submit grant applications and develop customized proposals
- Oversee the planning and execution of special fundraising events
- Build strong partnerships with donors, including through implementing a donor recognition and stewardship program
- Oversee the administration of a donor mailing list and database
- Track, manage and process all donations in coordination with the Director of Finance
- Complete funder reports, showcasing organizational impact
- Engage volunteers for special fund development projects
- Coordinate in-kind donations and make decisions regarding the issuing of receipts
Marketing & Communications
- Develop a communication plan to promote the organization’s charitable work to its donors and maximize public awareness of the fundraising activities of the organization
- Coordinate the design, printing and distribution of marketing and communication materials for development efforts
- Build relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization
- Develop graphics and presentations as needed for reporting, grant applications, or otherwise
Necessary Experience
- 3-5+ years experience in fundraising and resource development
- 3-5+ years experience in communications and/or marketing
- Completion of a post-secondary degree in a related field or education and experience equivalent
- Demonstrated success in the not-for-profit sector in major gift fundraising from individuals, corporations, foundations and other stakeholders
- Strong interpersonal and public relations skills and the ability to cultivate relationships with and communicate effectively with all donors, volunteers and other stakeholders
- Strong public speaking skills
- Strong written communications skills, and experience in grant writing and grant reporting
- Strong graphic design skills
- Proficiency with electronic communication tools and applications, including Google Drive
- Understanding of homelessness and affordable housing landscape in Canada an asset

Working Conditions
Job Type: Full-time
Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends during special events
Salary: $60,000 – 80,000/ year, commensurate with skills and experience
