West Central Women’s Resource Centre (WCWRC) provides services and programming to women and families in the West Central neighborhood of Winnipeg. WCWRC is hiring a Gender-Based Violence Counsellor. Reporting to Settlement Services Coordinator, the GBV Counsellor will work with families who have experienced violence with a focus on newcomer women. They will support clients on their healing journey, through group facilitation and one-to-one counselling.
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Length: March 31, 2021, with possibility of extension based on funding
Salary Range: $21-25/hr, commensurate with experience plus benefits package
Time Requirement: 37.5 hours/week
Closing Date: June 23, 2020
Responsibilities
- To provide individual counselling to women and families who have been impacted by violence – both family violence and state violence
- To plan, coordinate and facilitate a closed group healing circle and workshops for women and youth
- To empower women to advocate for themselves and to advocate on their behalf
- To provide information, referrals and system navigation to families
- Work collaborative with Settlement Workers to provide coordinated service delivery
- Report on program outcomes to the Settlement Services Coordinator as required by funding agreements
- To work with external evaluators to meaningfully evaluate the outcomes of the program and to adjust programming as required
- Actively participate in WCWRC staff retreats, trainings and meetings
- In conjunction with other WCWRC staff, provide on-going informal support, referral and direction to community women using the Centre
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Essential:
- Post-secondary degree in Counselling or the Social Services field
- Minimum of 2 years of experience providing long term, short term and crisis counselling
- Experience with the development, organization and facilitation of group programs
- Must be able to work effectively cross-culturally and with participants with low English levels
- Demonstrated understanding of working with marginalized communities, including an anti-oppression lens and the social determinants of health
- Strong understanding of empowerment, harm reduction and trauma informed care philosophies
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Familiar with the use of Microsoft office and outlook
- Professional and responsible with sensitive and confidential issues
- Experience working collaboratively with community organizations
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Self-motivated, able to work with minimal supervision
- A clear criminal record check and child abuse registry is required due to the nature of the position.
Preferred:
- Ability to speak one or more language supported through our settlement program is strongly preferred. Preferences given to Arabic, Swahili and Somali.
- Experience working for an IRCC funded agency and with ICARE
- Experience working within the non-profit sector
- Ability to work from a multi-level approach
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities
- Ability to multi-task
Working conditions:
- Days, with potential evening and weekend hours
