DMSMCA is a non-profit community renewal organization. We are community led with programs focused on employment, greening, safety, and housing. Our programs operate through a harm reduction lens.

Job Overview:

The Community Programs Assistant works at the front desk of our resource centre, helps to oversee programs, and helps to put on community events. Some of the programs include Youth Lunch Drop-In, Community Drop-In, and Our Place-Safe Space, which exists to serve area sex workers and community members who use drugs. Duties include, but are not limited to, distribution of harm reduction, hygiene, and basic needs items, helping participants and ensuring they follow Covid-19 procedures, general admin tasks, keeping accurate records of all activities, reception, and light cleaning duties.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work in coordination with the Community Programs Coordinator
  • Staff various drop-in programs
  • Assist people with finding and connecting to appropriate community resources
  • Assist people accessing harm reduction, hygiene, and basic needs supplies
  • Ensure our Respect Policy is followed and help participants de-escalate when necessary
  • Assist with organizing and staffing community events
  • Perform some cleaning and organizing tasks
  • Ensure participants and drop-in space follow Covid-19 guidelines
  • Reception and administrative duties as assigned.

Qualification and Experience:

  • Experience working with a wide array of community members
  • Experience working with inner-city populations
  • Experience working in a community-based organization
  • Knowledge and application of community development and harm reduction values
  • Experience in a busy office setting
  • Pro-active leader, positive attitude, enjoys taking initiative, works well independently as well as in a team

Funding requirements:

  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status
  • Able to work for the entirety of the contract

  • Demonstrated ability to locate and share currently available resources

  • Understanding and appreciation of inner-city communities

  • De-escalation skills
  • Working with historically marginalized populations
  • An appreciation for the importance of capturing data.
  • Computer skills: organized data management, use of Microsoft Office programs, locating resources online, navigating social media
  • A commitment to anti-oppressive approaches to service delivery and conflict resolution
  • Knowledge of the Daniel McIntyre/St. Matthews Community (preference given to DM/SM residents)

Wage and Hours of Work:
$18/hr at 30-35 hr/week
Four day shifts and one evening shift. Some evening and weekend hours as required.
Term until March 31, 2021.

Start Date: July 2020
