The WRENCH operates the largest and best equipped community bike shop in western Canada and is an international leader in community bike programming. Since 2010 the WRENCH has utilized volunteer labour and bike parts reclaimed from the waste steam to create community bike programming aimed at educating youth, empowering volunteers and providing people with affordable, sustainable active transportation options.

The WRENCH is a registered charity that creates stronger, healthier communities by removing barriers to building, repairing and maintaining bicycles – with a focus on educating youth. We make bikes accessible by:

LEADERSHIP

  • Oversee the operation of the organization.
  • Maintain a positive, healthy and safe work environment.
  • Work with the Board and Educational Director to provide guidance and stability for the organization.
  • Foster effective team-work and mentorship between the Board, the Educational Director, staff, and volunteers.
  • Act as a spokesperson for the organization; represent the organization at community activities to enhance the organization’s community profile.

FINANCIAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT

  • Develop and implement a financial plan including budget, grants, and proposals.
  • Coordinate all aspects of fundraising, including developing foundation and grant proposals, securing donations and sponsorship, fundraising events, and donor recognition.
  • Ensure that standard bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed.
  • Ensure non-profit regulations are met.
  • Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization.
  • Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditures of the organization, including a monthly financial report.

OPERATIONAL AND PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

  • Develop operational plans that work towards the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization’s programs and services.
  • Ensure that the organization’s operation meets the expectations of the Board, funders and clients.
  • Develop and implement an effective marketing and communication plan.
  • Review existing policies and procedures and recommend changes to Policy Committee.
  • Lead the business portion of Board meetings, preparing meeting agendas and supporting materials; deliver a monthly report to the Board, giving the status of each area of responsibility.
  • Determine staffing requirements for the organization.
  • Implement/Maintain a performance management process for all staff, which includes an annual performance review.
  • Establish, develop and maintain relationships and collaborative arrangements with community, government, stakeholders, and partners to help achieve the organization’s goals.

Qualifications

  • Ability to self-direct, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Experience with accounting software used to plan, track and amend organizational budgets
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and conflict management skills
  • Experience working with non-profit/community organizations and boards
  • Project management from conceptual design to final assessment
  • Experience in fundraising and grant writing
  • Familiarity with community bike shops and other local cycling organizations
  • Strong knowledge, commitment and demonstrated ability to apply diversity, equity, and cultural safety to all aspects of the work
  • Familiarity with social enterprise funding
  • Experience working with youth, Indigenous, and newcomer communities

The successful candidate will be required to complete a child abuse registry check and a criminal record check.
