Project Overview

Project 561 is an output from the very successful African Nova Scotia Youth Social Innovation Lab conducted by Common Good Solutions and the One North End Community Economic Development Society (the O.N.E.) The objective of the African Nova Scotian Social Innovation Employment Lab (the Lab) is to learn more about how systems and attitudes perpetuate disproportionately high rates of unemployment among ANS youth (aged 18-35), and to explore how to begin to make progress toward a shared future of equitable access to opportunities for employment and prosperous living. 

The intended impact of Project 561 is to make meaningful and measurable progress towards the following statement: African Nova Scotian (ANS) youth will be meaningfully employed in the Nova Scotia economy to the same degree as all other youth in the province.

This project is funded through the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Skills Strategy (YESS) program and will be carried out in close partnership with the Province of Nova Scotia.

The Role

As Program Officer, you will be focused on implementation; you will be translating the vision into tangible actions. You will work closely with the Program Director, who will hold the vision and set strategic direction. You will be in regular communication with all team members as you help them create and follow work plans. An effective Program Officer cares about the details, knows how to prioritize tasks, and knows how much structure to create in a complex environment.

Your Responsibilities

  • Determine and define project scope and objectives
  • With the Program Director, develop and maintain relationships with key project contacts: ESDC, CGS, ONE, ANS Employment Lab Multi-collaborator Advisory Committee (MSAC), Province of NS
  • Provide project updates on a consistent basis to key stakeholders about strategy, adjustments, and progress
  • Coordinate report and deliverable creation
  • Prepare and budget based on scope of work and resource requirements
  • Track project costs in order to meet budget
  • With input from the Program Director, develop and manage a detailed project schedule and work plan
  • Empower, advise, and support project staff
  • Work closely with project evaluators (internal and external) to ensure they have the information they need
  • Participate in hiring project staff
  • Manage contracts with vendors and suppliers by assigning tasks and communicating expected deliverables

Your Qualifications

This position is designated for African Nova Scotian applicants. Priority will be given to qualified African Nova Scotian youth, ages 18-35.

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • 5-7 years of leadership experience, preferably in a professional context
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong communicator (written and verbal)
  • Experience seeing projects through to completion, according to outlined scope, budget, and timeline
  • Proven decision making ability
  • Strong sense of connectedness to the ANS community
  • Highly conscientious
  • Familiarity with project management software tools, methodologies, and best practices
