Manager, Social Enterprise (Permanent, Full Time)

By addressing multiple needs, Bissell Centre provides a holistic approach to helping families and individuals. Currently, Bissell Centre is looking for the right individual to fill the position of Manager, Social Enterprise.

The key function of this position is to provide oversight and leadership to Bissell’s social enterprises and community economic development projects. This role will incorporate the goals of Bissell Centre’s Strategic Plan into the development of the United Church of Canada site in Beverly and the redevelopment of Moonlight Bay Centre at Lake Wabamun.

Under the direction of the Director of Social Enterprise, the expectation of this position is to expand, develop and grow the social enterprises, and move them in to further financial sustainability. This role requires someone who can network, communicate, and develop relationship with citizens, government, businesses, other non-profits, learning institutions, and other partners, while developing action plans and seeing them through.

Specific responsibilities of the position include: 

Moonlight Bay Centre (“MBC”) Redevelopment 

  • Complete the Investment Readiness Program viability study for transitioning MBC into a family camp facility that promotes healing and readiness for change with Indigenous partners.
  • Based on the results of the viability study, begin to test the feasibility of the model, and create a business plan. 
  • Create an interim plan for MBC to deliver programming with partners for summer of 2021 that considers existing rental agreements and generates revenue; this includes finding and managing renters for the facility.
  • Work with Parkland County, Alberta Camping Association, and other licensing bodies to ensure that the operations of the camp meet requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with Resource Development to explore additional sources of funding to support MBC’s redevelopment.
  • Work with Bissell’s Operations Manager to ensure maintenance and repairs are done in a timely manner to ensure that it is attractive to potential guests and safe for everyone.
  • Oversee and coordinate the cleanliness of the facility and its guestrooms with various contractors.
  • Report on activities, partnerships, budgets and programming on a monthly basis.

Beverly United Church of Canada

  • Create and implement an interim rental plan that focuses on revenue recovery until Spring 2022, this includes finding and managing tenants for the building.
  • Develop and maintain existing relationships with stakeholders in the community, this could include: residents, faith communities, businesses, the community league, and other partners.
  • Research other sustainable Community Economic Development (CED) models and develop a plan for the building to accommodate this model.
  • In Spring 2022, re-engage with the community partners to create a CED model for Beverly UCC building.
  • Work collaboratively with Resource Development to explore additional sources of funding to support this project.
  • Work with Bissell Centre’s operation manager to ensure maintenance and repairs are done in a timely manner.
  • Report on activities, partnerships, budgets and programming on a monthly basis.

Supervisory & Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in monthly supervision meetings with the Director of Social Enterprise. 
  • Recruit, draft contracts, support and supervise contractors to meet the activities outlined in the scope of work contract.
  • Attend Management Team meetings to address organizational issues and collaborate on organizational initiatives.
  • Other duties and projects as required by the Director of Social Enterprise.

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Social Sciences, Recreation, Sociology, Business, or a related discipline.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is considered an asset.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in business or social services management role; An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
  • Proven work experience in a community development setting.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural resources, ceremonies, and protocols is an asset.
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, result orientated, excellent time management, strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Excellent administrative and computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Criminal Record and Child Welfare checks are required.
  • Valid Driver’s License is required and access to a vehicle would be preferred.
  • Employees with Social Work Diploma/Degree/Masters are required to provide and maintain ongoing registration, in good standing, with Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) as per Alberta Health Professions Act.

About Moonlight Bay Centre: Located along Wabamun Lake, Moonlight Bay Centre is a relaxed, seasonal venue for groups up to 100. Facilities include a dining hall, commercial kitchen, recreation hall, cabins, canoes, a firepit and more.
